Short Takes: Olympus Has Fallen

A much better snack than the stale popcorn flick, "A Good Day to Die Hard," "Olympus Has Fallen," is straight forward bullet and knife to the head action flick that splatters the whole bloody affair of political conflict on the green grass of the White House. One sided from beginning to the end, there's no getting around who's the bad guy, and their particular motivations. But then again, Hollywood has never been content to play nice with the Russians (again) or fanatics in the Middle East. Instead, the players this time have a little Seoul to go big, as in big on the screen concerning North and South Korea.

Plot wise, feel free to insert your own cliche - if you've seen it in the last 40 years, especially if it involves the U.S. vs the world, it's probably in this picture. There's nothing exceptionally new, nor do I expect it to have anything revolutionary or groundbreaking, except in the way the writers wishes to embellish the million ways to take out crowds of people.

As for the acting, for what it's worth, it is what it is - I mean, for a generic film, it has some worth thanks to who's involved, even with the actors and actresses articulating lackluster but over the top lines. Gerald Butler remains in constant scowl, doing his best John McClane impression while channeling King Leonidas with some bad-ass guns. Meanwhile, Morgan Freeman presides as acting president with the same kind of 'Deep Impact' work he did for that film. Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett, Ashley Judd, Robert Forester, and Rick Yune round out the remaining cast.

Take away the faults and just watch it, and you'll simply understand the film is a nice alternative to what's been released of late. Yeah, it sometimes skips into some hilariously written dialogue, but for the most part, "Olympus Has Fallen" while perverse in the study concerning subconscious propaganda techniques, remains relatively a fun ride.
