Secrets for the simple sake of having people on the ins and outs are, for lack of a better term, bullshit. Not only is this corrosive to the staff at large, it's the sign of a small-minded (and I suspect, often small-penised) manager. Truly secure managers are comfortable cross-pollinating ideas, in the hopes that someone -- even a low-level someone, or someone outside of the usual team of experts -- will come up with a perspective that makes the idea stronger. Alloys, right? Really, REALLY strong managers surround themselves with people who are more knowledgeable than they are, and know only how to control conversations and exploration. Good post. Apologies for taking as long as I have to get to it... I'm getting caught up with contributions to the 18th symposium just in time for the 19th... The culture I left allowed for little input and much disciplinary situation, which in the long run definitely put a damper in coming into work. I am so glad I have left it, and moved on to something bigger and better!

I've worked in places like that too. I'm glad you got out of there! I countered them by saying "Don't tell me." when they teased me with 'secrets'. "I don't want to know." I didn't last long there, but that was fine. I was looking for a job when I found that one, and the next was indeed better.

The secretive manner of employers and managers in some organisations is appalling. Their secrets means mistrust of employees, which then leads to a demotivated workforce.

Employers like this think everything is great, but how much better would business be if their employees were happily engaged in the business. Seems like employers are just hiding their weakness and fear, in their secrets.
