A Bittersweet Goodbye
A Bittersweet Goodbye Today was one of those days. The soccer team played its final game of the season. It got crazy in the first team. Even me pulling the back and assigning less people on offense didnt stop the onslaught. I just didnt want the other team to be totally demoralized.... I gave them a ton of respect for playing their hearts out. Then came the party afterwards. We had pizza. I brought cupcakes so my could celebrate his birthday with a group of his friends. Then came time for us coaches to address everyone present. My little speech went something like this: "I want to say a very big thank you to all of you players. This was the first time I've stepped up to be an assistant coach and I couldn't have picked a better team. Every single one of you are just fantastic. I want all you parents to know how truly honored I am to have a been a part of this. And to Coach Dan, Thank you so much for letting me on board to help out. I learned a lot from you this season." Then came time to hand out all the trophies. just a small memento of this season. They came out really cool. Then everyone ran off to get ice cream. Did I mention our party was at, in my opinion, the best ice cream shop in town? The bittersweet part came at the end. Sitting on a picnic table by myself. Waving goodbye to all the players as one by one their drove away with their families. Knowing that if I decide to be an assistant again in the fall I wont be seeing a few of these again. Moving up to a higher division. I admit I got a little attached to these guys over the last two months. Watched them grow. Saw the friendships among teammates bloom. Helped their skills and teamwork improve. Only to let them go. Maybe the next team wont be so hard to watch leave... maybe. I was a Girl Scout leader for many years. If you live in the same area, you'll run into those kids and they WILL remember you. That's sweet. Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!
