Body image

A new local young woman viewed my profile, so I decided to read hers. I am forever reading profiles, and if you blog no matter where you are, chances are I have perved and read yours, or will be reading yours at some point in time. I’m just naturally curious. Anyway, in her profile this young woman stated, “I’m tall 5'7"“, and my first reaction was “that’s not tall”. For me that’s the tall end of average… I would consider someone 5’9” and above tall, but I guess it’s all relative. To a man who is 6’8”, 5’9” may seem short. I started thinking about body image and all the various descriptions we use on FriendFinder-x and other dating sites to describe body composition. None of them work 100 percent because they are all relative to what we believe, is average, athletic, large, petite, etc.

There are a lot of somewhat ridiculous (IMHO ) notions of what a healthy body should look like, and how to figure out if you or someone else has one. The problem with them is they try to over simplify things, for the sake of putting us in tidy little boxes. For example, if you have ever read anything about attraction, they always talk about ratios and proportionality. Men are apparently attracted to an hourglass figure; so If you are a woman, the discussion is about waist to hip ratio, with the “ideal” being .70, somewhere around a 10 inch difference between the two (give or take). Women on the other hand are supposedly attracted to a V shaped torso on a man, denoting an “athletic” body. So with a man it’s all about waist to shoulder ratio, were .75 is the supposed “ideal” ratio. This system is based on the visuals, all about eye candy. There is a second system that supposedly uses “science” to determine who has a good healthy body and who does not. You have no doubt heard of the Body Mass Index (BMI ), this one supposedly tells you whether you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.

The heaviest I have ever been is 286 lbs., I was visiting a friend when I discover how heavy I had gotten. The amusing thing is when we met 20 years ago, we got into trading barbs while working out, and I hit him with “you’ll hit 300lbs long before me brother”, which to me made perfect sense. He was 11 year my junior, he is about 6’5’ and I am 6’1”, and he was a little heavier than me at the time. Here it was almost 2 decades later when I topped out and I’m the one shaking hands with 300 lbs. But I digress. The way my body is, I am wide at the shoulders and narrow at the waist; a V shape. When I get heavy I get rounder not wider, so I will always have a great waist to shoulder measurement, and look good from the back even at my heaviest. From the front not so good; a profile and I take on a Buda like appearance. But even if you measured the circumference of my shoulder and waist, (as opposed to their widths), my measurements will never be too far above the .75 ratio. So for the purpose of FriendFinder-x, should I list myself as Athletic no matter my weight?

Now if I use the BMI, I am obese, based on my weight and height. Even if I hit what I consider my idea weight, somewhere in the 225-230 lbs. range, I would still be teetering between overweight and obese. Can you consider yourself to have an athletic body if the BMI says you are overweight or obese? Base on the BMI, to just sneak inside the normal range, I would have to weigh 189 lbs., or less, which will never happen. The one thing I understand is my body and its weight; I was a competitive wrestler through high school and part of university, so stepping on a scale was a daily occurrence, since you compete by weight class. While some of my friends were sleeping it off on a Saturday morning, I was stepping on a scale, hoping my weight was low enough to make my weight class. The very last competition I was in, I didn’t make weight that morning. So while the rest of the team went off to eat breakfast, I was going to the bathroom to try and squeeze out number 1 & 2, and running with a garbage bag on, in an effort to squeeze off that last ¾ lbs. to make my weight class. I was so drained after that and no breakfast, I lost my first 2 fights (no easy fights at that level), and was out of the tournament. I decided that afternoon I had had enough wrestling, it didn’t mix well with school and a social life, so ba-bye wrestling. Anyway my competition weight at age 21, 82KG, 180.78 lbs., that’s 8 pounds less than moving from overweight to “normal” according to the BMI. Just because I stopped wrestling competitively, didn’t mean I stopped weight training… I think I have packed on more than 8 lbs. of muscle since then, and I had to work very hard, ever week (cutting my calorie intake 2 to 3 day before weigh-in). I think if you saw me just before a tournament weigh-in, you would probably say I look emaciated, (that’s how most wrestlers tended to look). I think the BMI fails to take into account body composition. If you are muscular you are going to be overweight or obese according to it, and if you are thin you can get yourself a nice belly and still be “normal” according to the index. Just a little messed up don’t you think?

So why is this question even part of our profile? I saw one woman on this website, attractive woman, but I considered her large. On her profile she listed herself as athletic, which didn’t match her 5’3” height and rather Rubenesque proportions. And I have seen the opposite, fit looking individuals who list themselves as “A few extra pounds”. Surely we will get an idea of body composition from the photos, video, camming, Skype, etc., and we will definitely know what we are dealing with when we meet.

Way back when, there used to be 3 basic body type descriptions for men, Ectomorph, Endomorph and Mesomorph. It was a little less confusing to me anyway; give me the body type descriptions, the height, and the level of fitness and I had an idea of what to expect. Maybe, we should have to pick our body type from an illustration?

What do you think?

Reminds me of a blog I read the other day, a guy posted a weight height chart where normal and so on is. According to it I am extremely obese and man there are women way bigger than me, so it's like what are they? I carry weight well, no one ever guesses my correct weight. Plus even if I would get down to the weight I want to be at I'd still be considered obese in that chart. Yeah whatever. I don't need to be stick thin. Wouldn't look good on my frame anyway.

I sent an Angel to watch over you last night, it returned in a hurry. I asked why, it said "Angels can't watch porn." Thanks for fucking traumatizing my fucking Angel!

Don't bother trying to figure me out. Not even the little voices in my head understand me. It's pointless!

When I was a young fellow, full piss and vinegar I was all about body type, what was healthy etc.. As I matured I eventually decided that did not work, and I missed some very special ladies because of that attitude I had. Now I basically ignore the body type indicators and concentrate on chatting and knowing "her"

I am 5 3 yes short ass to say the least KHU and I am small frame on my body so not your average person for my age. I try to stay fit and keep active as I figure my body will shut down if I don't. I think some people go to extremes on here saying what they like before they even meet the person. You might be surprise you may even like them. I accept folks for being who they are and I don't judge people what so ever as it is what is inside a person that counts not outside! Be happy with yourself! hugs V

Lol, I'm undefeated in the carnival "guess you weight" contest. they always come up way light when they try to guess my weight. The blogger may have posted some version of the BMI, which seems to view thinner individuals with no muscle mass as normal.

Our maturity makes us look at things very differently compared to when we were younger. It's almost like we have to unlearn all the things that have been programed into us.

yes, a lot of people seem to confuse 6 and 9. I always look at things like height in terms of ranges. So I also considered 5'4" to 5'8" as average.

Like I said Missy, simple charts and definitions don't give us the information our eyes need to send sparks flying. For me I can't break it down to something quantifiable like great eyes and a sweet smile. There are intangible things that attract me to an individual, and it not dependent on height, weight, or dimensions. I just know it when I see it.

I'm 5' and 160lbs. When I joined this site in 2007 I was 96lbs. I have gone from an 'F' to the first 'U'. I have recently cut down on carbs not so much because I mind being this size but because so much is on my belly. The idea of someone saying,"Whoa. You got fat!", doesn't bother me nearly as much as someone saying,"Whoa. Are you pregnant again?!"
Pregnancy and the accompanying weight can be a tough thing on most. But it's tougher on those that are petite. On a larger individual the weight gain associated with pregnancy, isn't as big a deal, whether it all comes off or not.

Kinky, don't look at the whacko modeling weight chart. IHMO, the 100 lbs. for your first 5 feet, then 3 lbs. for every inch after that, is one of the stupidest guides I have even seem. Yes, please keep the curves.

Intenda, I don't know what to tell you about that. It's a fascinating thing when people pick a description, and then post photo and videos that refute what they have chosen.

I hear you V. As I said in a previous comment, it's the intangibles that really send sparks flying for me, as far as who will seem attractive to me. I think that is one of the reason I have such as wide pallet.

Issues around body image tend to make us do one of two things
we either portray ourselves how we WANT to be seen, or we describe ourselves very negatively.

I think for profiles we should have a friend - maybe not too close a friend due to bias's - describe our body types. Or better yet - no description, and let everyone make their own appraisal's
It's funny you should bring friends into the discuss. When I was filling in my profile, I put how others describe me to me. A common question I still get mostly from men, is if I played football, even at my advancing age. I actually did have a lady friend who is brutally honest, review my profile.

I am "U" in the picture....definitely short and tubby....or cuddly as I like to think lol. I have long since stopped worrying about it and don't worry much about men's shapes either....I worry more about the state of their minds.

The shape of the mind is important, more so when the light go down.
