55 lbs in 6 months, how I did it.

No Nutrisystem or Weightwatchers for me. 6 months ago I nearly hit the floor when I weighed 237lbs at my annual check-up. I'm the guy that weighed 125lbs soaking wet when I went in the Navy in 1986. How did this happen to me?

It happened because I allowed myself to become the resident garbage disposal. If there was just a little bit left, I would eat it so the dishes could be washed instead of putting just a little bit up in the fridge. I didn't eat often, but when I did eat, I always ate too much. It all adds up over time. In my case it took about 7 years to gain about 70 lbs. Slowly but surely I was getting bigger and bigger and I was getting more and more depressed. I realized the weight gain was affecting my over-all health more than I'd realized and I needed to make changes.

I started by trying to exercise. I joined a gym and started going 3-4 times a week. I got stronger, but wasn't losing weight. I got very discouraged and quit going to the gym. A year later I tried again with the same results. It just wasn't working so I took a step back and came up with a new plan.

I started out by getting rid of the chips, cookies, doughnuts, pies, little debbies, cakes, you name it, all that junk had to go. If it's in the house, I couldn't ignore it. So I just made sure that kind of junk wasn't around the house anymore. Next I focused on my meal portions. I cut what my typical meal portions had been over the years in HALF. I started eating an Orange after each meal (because that's my favorite fruit) to help feel full and satisfied with the smaller portions. And of course I continued to go to the gym and exercise 3 times a week.

So here I am, 6 months later, 181lbs! Still overweight, but below the obese level according to the standard BMI. It worked for me, and I'm still following the plan. It's been EASY, and SIMPLE! I hope to eventually get back down to around 165 or so which is what I weighed when I retired from the Navy in 2006.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day, and if this helps or encourages someone else then it'll make my day better too.

Thanks everyone. I posted this up more for people who might be struggling with weight gain themselves, more than for congratz, but I do appreciate them anyway. It's been far easier than I expected. I never feel like I'm starving myself and that was a huge fear before I started.

Update:

Down to 170 now. Still want to lose about another 10 pounds but at this point it's no problem. I'm so used to eating smaller portions it's just automatic. Now, when I reach my goal, I'm going to have to learn to eat more to maintain a healthy weight. LOL
