Feeling........

in a sci fi mood. I vaguely remember watching the original Star Trek [1966-1969], mostly because my older brothers watched it and we only had 1 tv lol.

Then Space 1999 [1975-1977] came along and it was corny but entertaining. Not Star Trek but at least they were trying.

Battlestar Galactica [the original series 1977-1978] took it up a notch, even if Starbuck and Apollo kept crash landing on planets ..... yet they never ran out of vipers.

Then we had the many incarnations of Star Trek: Next Generation [87-94], Deep Space Nine [93-99], Voyager [95-01], and my favourite of the new ones, Enterprise [2001-2005]. Still sucks that they didn't wrap that one up.

And then it all came together into one of the best shows, sci fi or otherwise, on tv, the new Battlestar Galactica [2004-09].

Like the original Star Trek, the writers used their platform to slip hot topics into their storylines. Kirk and gang addressed issues of race and gender roles in the original and the new BG also tackled controversial issues. Did anyone else notice the the human freedom fighters that were labelled terrorists by the cylons? Sci fi is a great stage to subtly tackle social issues of our time, issues that if tackled directly would cause outrage but presented in story form fly below the radar. I even wrote a paper on this very subject for a university course that my prof suggested I try to get published , but that very idea, sci fi as a form of social protest, showed up in a book a couple of years later.

But back to BG. They made sci fi, smart and sexy and they did a great job of wrapping it up ........ well ok, Starbuck coming back as an angel was stretching it but it's not like someone woke up from a dream and they tossed out the previous season

Plus a real good spinoff with a fantastic promo poster

What was your favourite sci fi series? [if you have one]
