Not Major Tom
Their offering to send me
to a place I always wanted to see
shove my tail in a shiny metal tube
fire me on a mathematical groove
orbiting and re-entry all programmed in
up to heaven then return to sin
the powers to be have a plan
to make of Mars a new land
without taxes or laws on labour
where to be rich will be in favour
for to be poor will involve
working for the company store
working for the company home
working for the company air
until all of Mars we terraform
and I am not sure of this offer at all
to be sent high just to fall
see all the Earth from above
see the constant bickering and lack of love
we don't even have philosophies on which to disagree
no worry about communism or religion from which to free
we crushed those isms long ago
but what is left is so human greed and ego
the gathering together of bombs and tanks
a world without charity forgetting to give thanks
for the fact we are here at all
and now I await their call
to be heading up on a rocket-ship
to be escaping all this shit
and yet the projected test flight
has me returning to the same sight
a world of greed and misunderstanding
of leaders ignorant and jingoistic grandstanding
perhaps at the height of parabola
I will simply yell out "hola!"
in the place between the heaven above
and the hell of Earth waiting below
open the shiny door and step away
and leave ground control to say
all the lies they will need to expend
to explain the strange death of men.
