2 October 2015

We had another magnificent day here, sixty degrees and sunny. There was a stiff breeze blowing and it was really pleasant hiking. The wind was brisk enough to hear it whistling through the trees and it was even knocking some leaves down.

Like I said, I finished my shingling so I don't feel too guilty taking off for the woods, even though there's still painting to do.

We may not hike tomorrow since PD is going to visit her daughters, but we got a nice walk in today- about three and a half miles. We found a turtle basking in the sun at the landbridge. We may not see much more of that, if the weather turns cold. There are a lot fewer dragonflies too, and they're smaller. Today we took the Mandala trail through a mature oak/beech forest. The trail winds around a couple of small bogs and I love seeing the sun glinting on the trees in the bog from the darkness of the forest.

Maybe I'll paint tomorrow. It's supposed to rain and that will give me a good excuse to put off finishing again.

Thanks Leo. It was fun nailing up the diamond patterns, but it ate through a lot of shingles, and it made for a lot of cutting.

Shingles look great!

All photos are wonderful, but the one of PD and Gracie is so serene ...

And photo above that, conveys completely different mood, it's edgy.

Thanks, Pet. I wanted to do the whole house in natural siding, all different kinds. I wanted to do a sunburst in cedar lap siding, and hand split some shakes to frame it. It's a quirky little place. The old paint was sprayed on dark red barn paint, and fucking ugly, with drab grey trim. I might strip off the cement shingles on the back addition along the driveway still and reside that. They look the worst there, and a mix and match of cedar siding would fit the cottage look of the place. But that's next year. I always wanted to build a fence out of huge old sixties and seventies car hoods welded together... but i think code enforcement, and the neighbors, might pitch a bitch. We could use some scrap iron sculpture too.

Thank you sweetest! I had planned on doing some other patterns too, but I'll have to save them for the next project. there's room on the north side of the house for something like the photo below, in a separate comment, and I'd LOVE to try that.

House chores can always wait another day. I love how the bark is curling off that tree.
Yeah, that's right. the work will always be there tomorrow.
I thought that peeling bark was cool, too.

And thank you AGAIN! The shingles didn't turn out too bad, did they? It brightened up the place a bit.

I hope you blow the photo of PD and Gracie up. That is a beautiful shot. I get my photo's done at Walgreens. They have the best prices and if you watch for sales, you can get enlargements done very cheap.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I liked that too. I've taken quite a few pictures of her at just that place on the trail. When the leaves are on it's very lush. I'm not sure how it's going to look when the colors come, but that could be really cool.

I'm good at starting things but terrible at finishing things. My solution now is not to start things!

I like your attitude! That's been my plan lately too, but my wife started this project. I dragged my feet for years when I had good excuses, but I just plumb ran out of time and excuses. she was right- the place looked like hell. I knew I'd have to finish it from the first paint stroke.

Well, I coulda been more oblique, I reckon, but but there are a lot of famous big asses out there (several of them are running for President) and naming the dreaded name seemed the most direct approach. I did worry about calling up the demons, but I only uttered it twice so I think we're OK.

I don't know if it's available in the UK, but Colin Quinn has a fairly new comedy routine (this year), "Unconstitutional" and the said K family got a mention. It's a scream if you can get a chance to watch it.

No, that's a pic I found on the web of a trompe l'oeil in wood on an old cottage. I tried to post it in response to [blog Darling_Annette] but I lost my gold card and couldn't. I got it back (the gold) this morning so I came in and posted it so everyone could see what I was talking about. I'd like to do something like this on the north side of my house just for kicks, and, OK to show off. Which only works if you don't fuck it up!
Our house is quirky and weird so it lends itself to stuff like this picture. I want to experiment with adding different kinds of natural siding- the place was built small, added on and added on and added on again, so instead or homogenizing it. I think I'd capitalize on the many additions by treating them in different ways. There's an old Queen Anne house in Kalamazoo that was purpose built that way and it's way cool.

This is the way our place looked before painting and shingling- not good.

Thanks, dayzee! I took some more yesterday and today. I'll probably post some of them in the next couple of days. It's changing every day. In another week it should be ablaze with color.
