Al Sabo 22 October 2015

Yesterday we had brilliant sunshine and windy cool weather. The sunlight makes the colors just pop. PD remarked that when she looked overhead along the trail, nearly anywhere, that it was like being in a gilded cathedral, but much more beautiful. We hiked about four miles at Al Sabo preserve, and reversed our circuit to try the different light from the new direction. It's sometimes hard to pick just ten photos to post. I'd like to share them all.

I love seeing the play of light on leaves and limbs. I love the way a shaft of light will spot and highlight a place on the forest floor, or light up a yellow tree as if the leaves were the source of all illumination. The sunlight really is in the leaves, bringing life to the tree, drawing up water from the soil like a thermosiphon. It's a miracle, especially when you understand how it works. A marvel of engineering, and although each tree is alike, all are unique.

We had a bumper crop of jack-in-the-pulpit this year and I kept an eye on them and marked where they grew. In late summer and early fall they bear fruit in little bright red berries. The plant had medicinal value to Native people but has to be handled with care. It contains oxalic acid, which can be extremely toxic. Our woods are full of berries this fall.

I hope you enjoy the photos. This was our afternoon hike.

It was simply glorious. The photos don't do it justice. You are immersed in the brilliant colors. It's just breathtaking.

Thanks cinnamon. I love that first one myself. For some reason that one vine has the deep red leaves bordered in black and it was stunning. The sheen of the sun on the leaf against the drab brown and pale green of the drying grass- that dewberry vine was just beautiful.

It's just amazing, and it never gets dull or commonplace. You'd think that if you've seen one leaf, you've seen them all, but if you thought that you wouldn't really be looking. It's unimaginably complex in its entirety and brilliantly simple in its details. It really is miraculous.

Thanks Dayzee. There are a couple of meadows in the Preserve that are a tangle of dewberry vines. They get such a deep red in autumn!

I don't want your head to swell but you really should organise an exhibition for your photos. I'm happy to be your agent for just a 50 per cent commission rate!

It's lovely even on a grey day but the bright sunlight really makes the forest come alive.

Jack-in-the-pulpit is an exotic looking thing. It has that odd cup and canopy that's kind of drab on the outside and brilliantly colored inside, and then when it ages it looks finished, dried out. Next thing you know those small red berries appear and it gets exotic all aver again.

Too late. My head's already puffed up from reading all these comments. Good thing my hat is on the hook.
Some woman on AssPlace suggested I sell them off and donate the proceeds to my high school class reunion committee- the class reunion I never attend and whose invitations I never respond to. I did think of a service she could donate herself but I kept mum about it. It's AssPlace and not this place.

Beautiful colors, everything here is gray and wet.
I heard you were getting drenched. It was a grey day yesterday, and again today. We had some rain last night but we haven't had a downpour since I fixed the roof. God is fucking with me. That roof is in perfect condition to the eye. I've been over it with a magnifying glass and repaired possible trouble spots four times. It lasts about three rains and then leaks again from a new place. It's just a little six by six porch roof but it's an extension of the larger roof making blending the shingles a bit dicey, so I've been stubborn about it.

Thanks, Pet. I have good days and bad ones. Some hikes nothing seems to turn out and this day everything looked pretty good. It's going to go all grey and brown very soon and I've been taking a LOT of pictures. I'm either gonna have to move 'em to an external hard drive or get ruthless about throwing them out. Knowing myself, I guess that means an external drive, or a thousand DVDs. I never throw much of anything away.

Wish you were here to see it in person. It's been a gorgeous autumn.

Dear kzoo,

Well dang. All that tree huggin goin on in here has made us feel a bit guilty for pissing on one earlier today. We will piss on the bush next time.

Unless of course we have bush huggers in here. Fucking republicans!

Bush huggers have been known to drop by. Truth to tell, I've nuzzled a few bushes myself.

Maples are magnificent in fall, especially hard maple. There are groves of them here, and they're a favorite shade tree because they're so beautiful. Sassafras is another tree that's spectacular in fall. The flaming orange they turn is electric. We hiked the Fred Russ Forest yesterday- mostly golden beech and bright yellow tulip poplar.

    Great Pics Kzoo!
Thanks, Rock. They're fading fast now. A lot of bare trees down by the swamp and the marsh. It's been windy and wet lately and that always knocks the leaves down. The beeches and oaks are really standing out now.

Excellent post Sir. I love the fall colors. I am going out to my sisters tomorrow for Thanksgiving. She lives way out in the country and has about 10 acres. May just take a little hike around her property and see what kinds of natural wonders I can find there. Thank you for all those beautiful pictures.
