Tuesday 5 January 2016- Asylum Lake

Tuesday we hiked at Asylum Lake. It was cool- twenty five or six degrees and a bit windy, making it a little brisk on the prairie, but once we got onto the shelter of the forest, and down into the little dells in the east end of the preserve it got more comfortable. The cold wind also makes you want to hurry- to get out of it- and we were working up some body heat. That’s where I could take my gloves off permanently for taking pictures.

We headed straight east and down the hill, aiming for Little Asylum Lake and the Big Tree. That trail takes a hard left at The Tree and runs straight north along the little lake, which is now frozen over. There are some dark spots on the ice and it hasn’t been cold for very long, so I don’t think I’d want to walk on it yet. Following this path you end up at the creek that feeds the smaller lake from Asylum Lake. Gracie waded there, but it was cold and she’s already growing up enough that she called it good just getting her feet wet. Last year she’d bound into the creek in any weather and even lie down in the shallow water, but that water’s cold, and it’s a sign she’s maturing that she let discretion be the better part of valor. Puppies are tremendous fun with their exuberance but they’re a handful too, and you have to keep an eye on them all the time. Our hikes ought to get easier now, if less exciting. She actually hears our commands now- and listens. The training is paying off.

We struggled up the bank between the creek and the big lake and walked down to the beach. Asylum Lake had a thin coating of ice all the way across, and in the nooks and bays the ice looked to be about an inch, but it’s cloudy white and hard to tell. It supported Gracie but you could hear it cracking. It supported me too and I could feel it give under me when I walked on it, and it cracked even louder under my weight. I didn’t walk out far at all, just a couple of feet. It’s quite shallow at the beach but I really don’t like hiking with cold wet feet. It doesn’t seem to bother Gracie.

The sky was very clear and blue that day and it felt so good to walk and soak up the bright sunlight. Now that we have snow on the ground the forest has new magic, and I notice so much more in the winter sun against the snow. Everything seems at rest now, and the gloom of December has passed. We can already see the days getting longer again. The seed pods and grass have dried up and the big oaks have lost most all of their leaves in the wind. You can still see quite a few where they’ve fallen or blown. A heavy snow will blanket all that. The forest will get very silent, very white and very bright. I hope it comes soon.

And that was our afternoon. It was quiet and peaceful and the brisk walk made us hungry. PD made portobello ravioli with a beef and sausage sauce, and we had garlic toast to soak up the sauce. Life is good.

I swear, our dogs and their love of the cold!
We had quite a rain shower here last night and it beat down hard,
Our little creek ran over and flooded the road and some of the area,
Even out onto the freeway.
Living vicariously through you!

I may not do right, but I do write,
I have bliss, joy, and happiness in my life,

Yes, they're both cold climate dogs. That icy water just doesn't seem to bother her, although she used to bust right in and run around splashing like a seal, and now just a little edge is off her enthusiasm. She's older and just getting used to it. Used to be she drove it like she stole it, and now she's taking more time to savor the moment.

Me too. I love being out there.
PD is a good cook. That's why I'm twenty pounds overweight. When I did my own cooking I never weighed this much in my life.

That's a two trunk oak with an enormous burl at the base, right between the two trunks. PD is fascinated with that burl. (Me too.) It's got to be pretty old, and I have no idea what caused such a huge growth. Either trunk is quite large on its own, but the aggregate makes it a massive tree trunk. The burl seen from the east, the opposite side to the one in the photo, looks a lot like an elephant head. I'll have to remember to get a picture of that. I may have one on my other computing machine.

Ha1 Thank you honey!

I like that perspective too. I've seen the city change a lot in sixty odd years, and watched them remove trees like this. We're lucky to have this preserve with those huge old trees. Many of them certainly pre-date the asylum. They grow mostly on the hills and slopes where the hospital never farmed. Trees with three foot diameters are common there.

Thank you! I wish I had that creek in my back yard. Gracie loves it, and it feels so good and cool in hot weather. But at least we get to visit it. The first time we took her there her face said it all: "Wow! What a great idea! How long has this been here? " She ran up and down the creek bed splashing and plowing the water with her face. She'll lie down in the water and roll over in it.

We got lucky with Gracie. She loves to chew, but she had a lot of toys, and she only wrecked one thing....she chewed the cord on PD's vibrator! While it was plugged in! I gave her hell and she never did it again.

She has always gotten a lot of rawhide chews, and I'm sure that helped. Today at Al Sabo she found a treasure...a used tampon. And she didn't want to give it up! PD had her on leash, and I was quite a way behind them, but I saw the struggle going on up ahead of me. PD won the wrestling match. But I have to wonder, who the hell changes tampons three miles out in the woods? Do they make 'em like ejector seats now, or rifle cartridges? Load a magazine in the morning and shoot all day? Who the fuck changes tampons out in the forest!!!???

You can't think about it. Don't visualize. I worked with a big guy who had a really weak stomach. He couldn't listen to any of us talking about the shit our dogs have eaten. Our customer service rep drove him into the can three times in one morning talking about her dog's appetite for certain canine delicacies. He already thought menstruation was a nasty thing women did to just to get even with him, but a tampon pupsickle...that put him over the edge.

I wanted to say how much I enjoy the photos you take on your hikes, but after I read all comments and your responses, all I can think about is Gracie shewing a used tampon. EWW!

Yeah, that got to Lala, too. But you've had dogs, and you know how they are. They just aren't disgusted by the same things we are.

Rocky grabbed a rabbit pancake off the pavement one day when PD walked him. I heard them quarreling in the garage. She'd made it back that far, but didn't want to come in the house with him having that stinking thing in his mouth. By then he had dug in his heels and didn't want to give it up, even to me. I got it away from him just the same. He knew my angry voice, and eventually gave up. PD asked me why he was being so bad. I told her he wasn't being bad, he was being a dog. Once it had turned into a test of wills, I had to win, but I wouldn't have challenged him quite that way. I would have told him "Leave it" before he'd grabbed it, and I would have meant it. Once it turns into a struggle, you've already lost.

Imagine the salad bowl/hot-tub you could make with that... But I wouldn't want to take the tree down until it was dead and going to rot away. There are lots of interesting things to see when your out walking about in the woods.

Yeah, that thing is a really big tree. There was a tulip poplar in Fred Russ Forest southwest of here that was about six feet in diameter and about three hundred years old. It was said to be a hundred and twenty feet tall. There was a tree next to it, its offspring, that was nearly as large. I think I have photos of that one on my old Yosemite. I'll have to dig those up. Both trees went down in storms. The smaller of the two didn't go on its own- it was struck by a couple of beeches that did blow down, and their weight plus the wind toppled it. That forest has a lot of virgin timber in it- never been harvested.
