What a great memory to have....I absolutely love that song by Roberta Flack....it was our first dance at my wedding.

    Great story!
That was a close shave. At least you're not liiving on Bolivian and Peruvian frogs now!
Though, provided no one got hurt, it would be fun seeing Elton John playing on a collapsed stage!
Thanks Spunky!
If anybody could play on a collapsed stage, Elton John could!

It's great since the speakers didn't topple over into the crowd! From Roberta Flack to Elton John it was like throwing a switch that night- we went from relief to panic in about a minute. She was soft and sweet and I can't remember a song she sang at that concert.

Hello Kzoopair
Pinball Wizard (Le Magicien Du Flipper)

(first verse)
(premier couplet)
Ever since I was a young boy,
Depuis que je suis un jeune garcon
I've played the silver ball.
J'ai joué au flipper
From Soho down to Brighton
De Soho jusqu'à Brighton
I must have played them all.
J'ai dû tous les jouer
But I ain't seen nothing like him
Mais je n'ai vu personne comme lui
In any amusement hall
Dans aucune salle de jeux
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Ce gosse sourd, idiot et aveugle
Sure plays a mean pinball !
Joue vraiment bien au flipper

(second verse)
(second couplet)
He stands like a statue,
Il se tient comme une statue
Becomes part of the machine.
Devient un morceau de la machine
Feeling all the bumpers
Sentant tous les bumpers
Always playing clean.
Jouant toujours proprement
He plays by intuition,
Il joue par intuition
The digit counters fall.
Le compteur digital explose
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Ce gosse sourd, muet et aveugle
Sure plays a mean pin ball !
Joue vraiment bien au flipper

He's a pin ball wizard
C'est un magicien du flipper
There has got to be a twist.
Il a dû y avoir un truc
A pinball wizard,
Un magicien du flipper
S'got such a supple wrist.
Il a un poignet tellement souple

'How do you think he does it ?
Comme penses-tu qu'il fait ça ?
I don't know !
Je ne sais pas
What makes him so good ? '
Qu'est-ce qui le rend si bon ?

(third verse)
(troisieme couplet)
He ain't got no distractions
Rien ne peut le perturber
Can't hear those buzzers and bells,
Il ne peut entendre tous ces bumpers et cloches,
Don't see lights a flashin'
Ni voir ces lumières clignoter
Plays by sense of smell.
Il joue avec son odorat
Always get some replay,
Il obtient toujours la partie gratuite
'Ve never seen him fall...
Jamais nous ne l'avons vu échouer
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Ce gosse sourd, muet et aveugle
Sure plays a mean pinball.
Joue vraiment bien au flipper

I thought I was
Je pensais que j'étais
The Bally table king.
Le roi de la table Bally. (1)
But I just handed
Mais je lui ai simplement remis
My pin ball crown to him.
Ma couronne de roi du flipper

(fourth verse)
(quatrieme couplet)
Even my usual table
Même sur mon propre terrain
He can beat my best.
Il peut battre mon meilleur score.
His disciples lead him in
Ses disciples le guident
And he just does the rest.
Et il fait juste le reste.
He's got crazy flipper fingers
Il a des doigts magiques (2)
Never seen him fall...
Jamais vu échouer... .
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Ce gosse sourd, muet et aveugle
Sure plays a mean pinball !
Joue vraiment bien au flipper

Thanks Pink! That thing started out bad and could have ended even worse. I think the god of stoners was looking out for us that night.

Obviously then I haven't told it enough times. That's two of you who claim you've never heard it! I can fix that.

Another very interesting tale from your archive Kzoo. How old were you at the time? If you mentioned it, I missed it.
I must have been twenty one or twenty two. I think that concert was in seventy three. Seems like it was winter. Anyway- I was young.

Thanks for a wonderful read! I too felt great concern as each song seemed louder than the last, I felt like I was right there with you Your moment of desperation, imagining the fugitive life in the mountains of Bolivia sounds EXACTLY like the reasoning of a kid....reminded me of me at certain times of my life

Thank you. I really was thinking I'd have to run for it. I was picturing an angry mob, with pitchforks. And it was a close call- my Spanish isn't all that good.

What a great new profile picture you have!

I continue to relish your storytelling prowess. As has been said elsewhere (likely by me about you), your ability to tell a story that flows with ease is likely the result of blood, sweat, toil, and tears.

Ah, no, did not mean to get all David Clayton Thomas on you. But loved this story, with all of its physical detail as well as, um, emotional turgidness. Great stuff!

My own first concert story is somewhat less traumatic... It was Country Joe McDonald (of Country Joe and the Fish fame) and Friends. That night might have involved my first experience with a substance John Prine sang about in "Illegal Smile." Then again, it might not, 'cause that shit fucks with your memory, y'know?

I'm ever-so-slowly catching up with my symposium responsibilities... will have the new slate posted by the end of this week... and still have the 18th to enjoy. But this, as I wind down commenting on contributions to the 17th, was a fine way to go... thank you!

Stop in, read, and offer comments at my "swinging as seen in the media" blog, "Confessions of a Lifestyle Man" humorlife, which is also the home of the monthly virtual symposium. New post: The Virtual Symposium Returns Lets Pick A Topic

I seem to remember someone who looks a lot like you. My own memory is getting slow these days. It's just as good, just as solid as it ever was, just slower.

Thanks for your wonderful comment. If you happen to run into that other guy from New York who used to blog here, say hello from me and tell him I miss him a lot.
