 I'm sure I'm seeing differences in the ways trees grow in the forest compared to the way they grow in an urban environment.

Beautiful.

I had to check to see if I had any red today. Just one. (Two if I count my petunias.) And one purple. The rest are yellow to orange.

I love red in nature- the red leaves and berries, red lips. I always wear muted colors, but over the last couple of months I've had people tell me red is my color, but i don't ordinarily like drawing attention to myself that way.

There isn't quite as much red this year, but the yellow and orange are gorgeous. These trees have competition from each other but they get no pruning and all the nutrients are right there in the corpses of old and fallen trees. In the beech woods to the east there's little undergrowth, but under the oaks and hickories along the marsh there's a riot of bushes and young trees- most of it brilliant yellow.

Maples, sumacs and dogwoods all display red in autumn, and then we have scarlet oaks that are one of the last colors of autumn. There are lots of vines and brambles that are also red. Anthocyanins are what makes red. And that's a complicated formula of moisture at the proper time and amount, frost and sunlight.

 we're finally seeing some color here now.

the berries were lovely so perfect, but i have to say a dog will always make me smile.

Gracie provokes belly laughs. She's always been a wild thing and when she gets excited she runs just for the joy of it and the exuberance of being alive. She's a prankster too and plays hide and seek with me in the forest...even when I'm not playing.

It IS stunning. And quite the miracle too. It's speculated that our knowledge of the universe is limited by the ability of our senses to perceive it, and I'll buy that, but I'm not disappointed with what I'm able to perceive.

It's nice to see you here again.

We won't be sorry to see winter come if we get some snow- at least Gracie and I won't. We have the expense of heating and hauling fuel and ashes but winter is our quietest time in the forest, so we'll be good with that.

I do know what you mean- this year seems to have flown by.

 There weren't many red oak leaves this year. Most of them just turned brown. I found a few though!
