When you're a really upbeat person . . .

Nervous lovers - build up your confidence by playing your favourite live album during sex - pretend the applause between songs is for your performance - Viz Top Tip

I start this week's blog with a reference to background music as I'm going to touch on the matter of setting the scene. I was prompted to think about this the other day watching a cam. For the umpteenth time the woman on cam had some crappy reality TV/Make Over/Police Camera Action/Wheeler Dealer Auction show on in the background - it was a bunch of construction workmen in the middle of a prolonged and circular argument. I put her on mute thinking 'jeez that sounds just like work' - maybe when you cam you forget what TV/Radio/DVD is playing in your room and you're fully engaged with your online audience - that's the only reasonable explanation for letting something that is fundamentally boring play on while you let people into your domestic life.

At the risk of making myself fantastically unpopular with women yet again, I must say that I've watched 1000+ different cams of the fairer sex - not once have I overheard anything amusing being played in the background - no TV sitcoms, no funny films, no radio comedies, no clips of live stand up on Youtube. I find this very interesting in the context of being told that sense of humour is really important to women and the Smile Nazi brigade (see previous blogs) that want everyone to be a ray of smiley sunshine all day. So what's at work here? You really want men to make you laugh, but left to your own devices you never amuse yourself?

Being an upbeat person and lifting the mood of others, true to the title of this blog doesn't necessarily involve playing side-splitting comedy on a loop, it can involve inspirational music, film scenes, sport scenes, stirring political/civil rights speeches. I'm not a 'I bring you love' flower all the time but I like to think I know how to light a fire under someone and lift their mood.

The evangelical audience in Disclosure's 'When a fire starts to burn' video, we could all do with a bit of this in our lives

When I first started to cam, I was pretty timid, unsure of myself, I genuinely didn't know if anyone would ever dwell on my cam and accept me much. The initial feedback was positive, if sometimes backhanded, having been a cam holdout for a long time women said things like, 'Oh you look better than I expected' - as if I'd been concealing something by only having pics. Then I stopped worrying about my own cam and started to analyse others. The first things I noticed where how crappy interior decor is in most homes and how little thought people put into the ambience they were creating - people well into middle age playing the radio with Top 40 dance music - personally I think there's something faintly tragic about someone pushing 50 humming along to Duke Dumont or Sigma. So my first reaction to this was, 'Okay fuck that, I'm never playing any Top 40 music, too many others do'. I started playing my own music - allsorts - Orbital, Blondie, Chic, David Bowie, The Kinks, REM, Public Enemy, The Stone Roses - generally stuff no one else will play you.

As I have a high embarrassment threshold I started singing along too - I guess that's my performance angle - other people fiddle with their genitals but I'd rather show you I can hold the high notes to a James Blake or Bronski Beat tune. I'm not trying to pretend I'm Iggy Pop or Mick Jagger, but I am trying to show I'm not a dull lifeless stiff that sits there, makes no effort and plays something that makes you want to put a foot through your monitor in the background

Orbital playing in New York - come on lets have it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
