Not A Swan Song. A Poem

It's tearing at my heart
Knowing you will soon
Be gone.
Not because of me
But because of human frailty.
There might have been a swan
Had we had more time
Instead I will remember
The songs on the radio
That we talked about
On our drive up North.
One I might have heard
Whose artist"s name
I was ignorant of
How can I have been
Alive and American
To not know of John Prine?
He was a folk singer
In the mold of Bob Dylan
I remarked
He sounded like the singer
From Dire Straits.
To which you replied
That would be Mark Knopfler.

Then I heard a version
Of Redemption Song
Sung by Johhny Cash
And another man.
I had to use Google
To find his name.
Joe Strummer
Well known
For his band
The Clash.
Johnny and Joe
Quite the pair
Of differing styles
But Marley had a way
Of bringing folks together.

I want to remember
Taking A Walk
And Redemption Song
They stood out
On our jaunt.
Is it just coincidence?
Yes, of course.
But the message in each
Is not lost
On those of us
Who are conscious
And considerate.
We need people
And collaboration
But also the solitude
Of walking with our thoughts.

I would hope for
Many more such moments
And if we see an actual swan
We take notice
Of the beauty of nature
Not just it's euphemism
Of song.
