"je ne sais quoi" part 2

She followed her dazzling smile right up to me as I shut off the mower and I realized she was a couple inches taller than I was as she introduced herself as my neighbor; the wife and Mom. The gist of our conversation, or rather her monologue and my mumbled response was that her husband traveled extensively and worked odd hours on his job so would I mind including their lawn when I mowed ours for $10.00 for each mowing ... of course I would ... and did ,,, and that was the beginning.

That summer I became pretty much a fixture next door. She wasn't really a "parent", someone else's Mom or a wife, cause I didn't really see much of him at all. She became a friend ... a bit older, perhaps sorta a big sister. Since my Mom worked during the day, she began feeding me lunch along with her . It was more like a picnic as we would all assemble in the kitchen and then carry everything out to the back patio and sit around her round white metal table underneath her big umbrella. After lunch the would usually take naps and we would clean up and then go back outside and again sit at the table for awhile and just talk or play cards; gin, and she taught me to be pretty good at it. Sometimes, later on when the got up from their naps, they would play in the little plastic pool or sand box and one, two or sometimes a few of her girl friends would show up and we would all just hang out for a while ... just talking mostly and it was really fun for me, for all of us I think as we did it often.

When her husband was out of town, sometimes we would all stay for an early dinner ... which was just an extension of what we now called "patio parties" around that white table. Only one of our group was married with a couple so the rest of them could stay later without any problem. In fact, I was usually the first to leave because my Mom would be coming home from work.

Although our "patio parties" were great fun, I appreciated our time alone together the most of all. We soon became more than just friends ... confidants; confidants without many boundaries such as me confessing I was a virgin and she confiding that she was not sleeping with her husband; in fact he slept downstairs in what used to be the rec room while she slept upstairs, forward in what was the master bedroom ... and at the time, due to the bedroom locations, I assumed he moved out of their bed in the master bedroom. At pretty much that point, we had reached our outer limits ... practically no more reservations at all ... just many personal, cathartic, discussions about everything while sitting at the white table.

As far as the rest of her family was concerned, I didn't really become close to her but I did enjoy playing with them for a short time when they were in my care. They weren't brats but really nice ; I guess it was just that I got bored with their games pretty quickly. A few times I was invited to dinner on the weekend and a couple times her husband was home and I actually met him ... literally in passing as he did not eat with us but we crossed paths in the afternoon and evening a number of times and greeted each other with minimal acknowledgements. I don't remember it being at all awkward however now it seems really bizarre, even to me who was there and at the time pretty much just went with the flow. She said something about his shyness and involved with his work. I thought simply, WEIRD ... and now I think perhaps he had/was the antithesis of je ne sais quoi for sure.
