 he may have not installed the battery, i have bought vibrators for my wife and the sales clerk at the store put the batteries in to make sure that it worked since they don't take returns.

 Clean sanitize and enjoy your party gift. May be they both want to have you to be a closer friend and they just do not know how to say it .
