Bad Girls (1981) Review

Directed by David I. Frazer and Svetlana. This review is of the 82-minute version available on DVD from VCX.

This movie is about four girls who go on a camping trip only to be held captive by a BDSM group that has an estate tucked away in the forest. They manage to escape with the help of a member who has since been banished (played by Ron Jeremy) and a master that has turned rogue (played by Michael Snow). While the story's premise was fairly solid, it would have been stronger had the girls developed and executed a plan to escape, instead of those associated with their captors. Story Grade: B-.

This movie was shot on film and had a theatrical run, having been distributed by Cinetrex Distribution. Medium Grade: A.

Many of the scenes were outdoors. IMDB lists the Rocky Mountains of Colorado as a filming location. Indoor scenes appeared to be real locations rather than sets built on soundstages. Although dungeons are mentioned in the movie, they do not appear in this version of the film. (They may exist in the 91-minute director's cut version. Some scenes were cut to comply with various state and local obscenity laws.) Set Design Grade: A.

On the whole, the sexual performances were very erotic. Performers seemed to enjoy themselves. Sexual Performances Grade: A.

Some of the acting seemed to lack motivation and urgency. Ron Jeremy did a fine job as a boy scout troop leader. Interestingly enough, his threat of physical violence toward Chrissie (placed by Anna Ventura) remains in the movie. This is something that would most likely never make it into an x-rated film today. Having women seduce a 16-year old boy probably wouldn't cut it today either. Perhaps it would have been a cliche, but the handsome woodsman character (played by John Leslie) could have been utilized in the girls' escape sequence in some capacity. Richard Pacheco also did well portraying a British photographer. Acting Grade: B+.

Having Angie (played by Pia Snow) wear a bikini and heels while driving the camper didn't seem believable. Bo (played by Lenora Bruce) wearing spandex pants while hiking also wasn't quite right. However, it may have been realistic that they had such stylish outfits with them on a camping trip since Kate (played by Victoria Knoll) was a model and photographer. They may all have been models in the film, but that was never specifically stated. Wardrobe Grade: B.

Since many scenes were outdoors and the remaining indoor scenes appear to have been shot during the day, natural light was used to a great extent. The scenes with Lenora Bruce and John Leslie were clearly shot at different times, as the daylight didn't match in some shots, nor in the sequence of events within the story. At a couple of points in their sex scene, it was completely dark outside and a spotlight was seemingly shone on them. Lighting Grade: B.

The sound was clear throughout the film. Voices over the telephone were done correctly. The movie had its own theme song. Sound Grade: A.

The directing was good; however, the mismatched day/dusk scenes were noticeable and there were a number of scenes in which the boom or a shadow of the boom could be seen. The girls could have driven more of the action instead of solely being the recipients of the action. (This refers not to the sex, but to their capture and eventual escape.) A reference to the movie Deliverance remained in this cut. The mismatched day/dusk scenes could probably have been avoided. Directing Grade: B.

Given that this had a theatrical run, there is definitely a high degree of artistry to this picture. It would be great to see the director's cut version at some point to see what has been removed. As this movie is now over 30 years old, I imagine the content that was cut would probably be deemed as tame by today's standards anyway. The outdoor scenes were beautifully done. Artistic Merit Grade: A-.

OVERALL GRADE: B+.

always enjoyed "New Wave Hookers" that is until it was pulled as Traci Lords was under 18.

New Wave Hookers is an excellent movie. I'm sure I'll be reviewing that entire series sometime in the future. Thank you for your comment.

Ron Jeremy also does a fine job in Bad Girls II. When I saw him at the AVN Expo in Vegas, I asked what he felt was his best performance in an x-rated film, to which he replied Fascination.
