tolerance and the box of crayons
tolerance and the box of crayons First, I will give credit where credit is due....GymDandy created a blog about the Box of Crayons yesterday. Though I was not able to comment as he set it up so only friends could comment, I was able to read his opening blog...and some of the comments. I can't contact Gym and ask permission to use his idea for this blog so I am hoping he doesn't mind. In Gym's blog, he used the word 'tolerance' towards others, because we all do choose to live in the same 'box'....and there are a rainbow of different exciting, beautiful colors in the box. Each of us is unique. We don't have to live in the same box. We do have the choice to leave the box or to just ignore the color next to us if we don't like that color. Tolerance is a word used a lot in the blogs these days. The dictionary defines tolerance as 'the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with'. I would add to that...it also means (for me anyway) to tolerate something you do not agree with, without using unkind words towards the other party. It means respecting the other colors in the box enough to let them be their own color with no repercussions. We are all different...unique....we all have something special to contribute toward the beautiful picture created with all the colors in the box. What does tolerance mean to you? Have you had a personal experience in your life, where you showed kind tolerance toward someone or they showed it to you? I am inviting everyone to comment on this colorful subject on this Labor Day Monday.... however, I will be approving messages before they post so that there are no angry, hateful, bashing words here....from anyone That is what blogging is all about...a safe place to let your views be known without all the anger in your face. Take care and have a great day! Read RESPECT WE all NEED to do Better and Re Petition to Stop Transsexuals from Using Female Profiles |

The willingness to tolerate something, like opinions or behavior that you do not necessarily agree with. One question I would pose is: Are people who can’t tolerate a lack of tolerance in effect being intolerant? When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

I am still tolerant of their ideas, I just don't happen to agree with them and I am not going to get into a fight.... Thanks for the question! It's a good one! I think it's fairly obvious what it means, so I'll say that one thing it does not mean is an indifference to harassment and abuse. I suppose that instead of defining tolerance here I'm simply defining the limits of my own tolerance. I don't care for word games or clever attempts to distract our attention with them. The notion that we must tolerate intolerance is absurd, as is the notion that my own objection to an intolerant act is the moral equivalent of that initial act.
