The Early Years - Part 1

1975 - Growing up in Central Jersey, Living with 3 older sisters who all moved out of the house. I thought to myself let me try on some clothes they left behind. I so fell in love with my new look.

Within a couple of months I got up enough nerve to buy my first wig and some makeup. Along with buying my first bikini at Bamberger's (didn't have enough nerve to try it on at the store). When I got home I couldn't wait to try it on. The bikini was a bit small but still fit. Having a young look ...it look like a perfect match.

When it got dark at night I found myself walking in an area I never hung out in. Wearing my sisters jeans,a top and some heels. Thinking I looked good but chances are not. In time I was able to master the craft with wearing make.

Here we are in 1976, The same year I became of driving age (17) in the state of NJ. I found a whole new lifestyle. Still being at home I would dress in female clothes under my male clothes and do the following.

Driving from Central Jersey to NYC I would stop along one of the rest areas along the Jersey Turnpike. Park my car in a quiet / dark area and take off my male clothes, put on my makeup and wig. My favorite outfit always seemed to be JouJou Black spandex pants, Halter top and Candies Sandles.

By the time I arrived into the city the clothing stores were closed. It would be around 11 pm. A perfect time to go window shopping. This was a perfect way to learn NYC block-by-block in a whole new look. Started out spending most of my time in the time square /West side area. Never had a hard time parking. I always parked around 9th & 10th ave either in the mid 30's to 45th street.

To this point I didn't mention anything to my real friends about my new adventure... Thinking to myself how do you explain to people about my new look/love in life.

Thank you! All is good. Hope the same with you... I've been spending some time the past few weeks working with the city of AC on some marketing projects for the Spring/Summer months.

It's great to hear from you.
Those had to be confusing, scary, but interesting times for you. . Luckily for you, it was the mid 70's. . The disco era, when more things *unusual* were better accepted.
The Times Square area has always been fun to visit, but in the late 60's when I used to visit the City the most, we found The Village was the place to be.
On the corner of McDougal and Bleeker was a really great pizza shop that was open all night long. . Many of the *hippie* shops were open till 4 or 5am, so there was always things to do... and see.
Those were great times, for sure.

They were scary but so exciting. Was such a new high Growing up in Jersey all I can say is thanks to the Village Voice paper for giving me ideas on where to go. That will all be talked about in another post... The 70's were great. Made it very easy for me...

See that! . You mention NYC and I get all chatty...
But YOUR story is so interesting. . It must have been so scary to do those things. . And hard to hide it all from family and friends. .
You sure were brave!
