Remember, Boys & Girls, Talking To People on the Internet is Talking To Strangers!

Every so often i come across a guy bemoaning the fact that women, on the internet, are ignoring him.

Yeah, dude, sorry, not sorry. This is the internet and you are a stranger and nobody owes you a reply anymore than a woman owes you sex after dinner.

Frankly, this expectation is creepy.

Not only that, women are frequently subjected to horrific emotional abuse MOST of the time they turn a guy down...so...obviously, the only safe way to respond to someone one isn't interested in is to ignore. Plain and simple.

Not long ago, one of these guys just repeatedly, and persistently messaged me. Thing is, when I'm using my phone, blocking a dude like that is trickier, so I hadn't yet got around to it.

Finally, I just told him why I don't message guys who I'm not interested in. He feigned interest in how awful that was, and then tried to tell me how great of a guy he was so I'd go out with him.

Seriously?

What a waste of time and energy! It's incredibly draining dealing with this kind of nonsense. Even when men are not going to be abusive fucks, a giant number beyond that refuse to take no for an answer...so....why...on...earth...should...I...or...any...female...bother...to...respond...like...ever?

The delete button is so much easier.

Sadly lots of Guys on here have No Idea! They think of you ladies as a piece of Meat. Makes me embarrased for my Sex.
Personnally, when I get rejectedand I do a lot, probably due to my age. I always say thank you for letting me know.

I have never engaged in this behavior.Sadly it seems people like this will never have a clue of just how abusive they're being. They seem to thrive on
abuse as well and that's a nasty combination.
Great post!

There are a number of possible reasons for the whole expectation of attention:

- The ads say (or at least used to say), "Get laid tonight!" and some guys just don't understand that an advertising slogan is not a promise of how anyone will behave, except maybe by extremely unlikely coincidence.
- The frustration that results from the unfavorable gender ratio pushes some guys to foolishness.
- Some guys are just jerks.

(Excuse me if I've written this in reply to your messages before.)

I, too, think DiscreteSteve makes good points, particularly re: FriendFinder-x's advertising. I get e-mails saying, "This_Dude, 35 hotties in your area want to meet you!" etc. Some of us recognize it for what it is: advertising, but I can imagine others taking that wording more seriously.

Also, I've heard about a culture of entitlement among males when it comes to sex. I've heard this particularly in regards to college (where sexual assault/abuse--FriendFinder-x won't allow the "r" word here--is common), but it may extend to other aspects of life. Young men see depictions of college guys getting laid, so when they reach college they expect it. If some of them don't get it, they go to extremes.

This was discussed a year or two ago on the radio show Feminist Magazine. (As I recall, an author who wrote a book on the subject was interviewed.)

Tons of other women on dating sites have described experiencing anger from males when replies aren't forthcoming or communication stops. It sounds to me like entitlement
may at least be part of it.

I definitely think entitlement is a huge problem. Just blocked a guy in my inbox who got all pissy with me and I can't even figure out why. The best explanation for it is he felt entitled to immediate admiration and when he confused me by not being specific, rather than letting him neg me, I wittily outwitted him. Instead of recognizing that as a male it was his job to create a safe and comfortable dialogue, he was a bit of an arogant prick and I didn't roll with it.

My ex was horrifically entitled around sex.

Yeah, entitlement...sucks.
