Meet Lonely Man

Lonely Man lives alone. He eats alone and sleeps alone. He wakes up alone, showers alone, and drinks his morning coffee alone. He drives his car to work alone, in a stream of vehicles all going their own direction. He works in a building with hundreds of other people but somehow spends most of his time working alone. He shops alone. He watches TV alone. He drinks alone.

Lonely Man pretends he likes being alone. He pretends that he enjoys making decisions based on his wants alone. No one to compromise with, no one to have to share with. He can choose what and when he eats and drinks. He can stay up all night and sleep all day if he wants. He can leave the bed unmade. He can leave the toilet seat up or down and leave dirty dishes in the sink for a week with no one to nag him. He pretends this is a wonderful life. Lonely Man is a castaway, on his little tiny island in the middle of the city. Deep inside Lonely Man does not want to be alone.

Sometimes what separates you from the herd is that you don't act like everyone else in the herd and the herd doesn't like that. Yes I said herd, as in one of many cattle. I don't like being alone but compared to being part of the herd it is the lesser of two evils.

Please don't let me be misunderstood.

Thank you for that analogy. However Lonely Man is fictional and his character is drawn from both mine and all lonely people's experiences. I envision him as part of the herd, blending in, and thus becoming anonymous; which then leads to his loneliness. In order to end his loneliness he must stand out from the herd. Will he? Please feel free to check back for more stories of Lonely Man. Your comments are always appreciated.

Thank you for the hug. I'm already seeing it as the subject of a Lonely Man story: "Lonely Man Get's a Hug".
hugs back

I can imagine having to remind you to clean the kitchen. Down on your knees, mopping the floor with a bucket and rag. Just an apron on, your ass sticking up as I stand over you making sure you are doing it right.... I digress. As for the photo. I was photographing guitars at work one day and got bored. That took twenty minutes and as many takes to capture the reflection of my face like that.
