the fall equinox

Picture if you will.....

a man tall and strong, broad of shoulder and biceps and flame red hair in a wild nimbus around his head and a deep red beard an aura of brightness all around him standing in what would seem to be a rather odd stance. His left foot is perched on the lip of a cauldron and his right foot is on the back of a goat. Of a sudden a deep black spear hurtles out of the space in front of him and transfixes the man in the chest. It is a mortal wound and with a brilliant flash of light the man disappears. But look again! he is not truly dead above where he previously existed there is now an eagle who glows with inner power and soars high into the sky.

From the shadowed space to the side of the cauldron a young man emerges. His features are dark from his skin to his hair and beard to his dark smoldering eyes. He bekons to an area just off to the right of the goat and from the shadows a lissome older lady emerges her beauty just beginning to meld with the wisdom of middle years. "At last it is done and he is dead!" her voice full of passion for the younger man at her side. He puts a possessive arm around her waist and says "yes he is dead now you are mine!" the scene ends with the dark young man and the lady walking off into the shadows and fading from sight.

The lady is known in this scene as Gaia...Isis... Bloudwedd and many other names but the underlying reality is the same she is the Goddess of the Earth the living breathing essesnce of what it is to be Female. The dark man in the scene is known by many names too depending on which country acknowledges him---- Set, in Egypt, Samhain in ancient Ireland, Goronwy in Wales and Brittany, Hades in Greece and sometimes his attributes are ascribed to Satan in the Christian tradition. He is the Lord of Darkness (not Evil but Night which is a different thing entirely). The Man with the red hair is also known by several names and is the Lord of the Sun ---or Daylight. he is known as Lew or Lugh in Scotland and the UK, Ra in Egypt, Mithras in the Iranian and Iraqi traditions, Apollo in Greece. Together they form the living breathing essence of the Male principle of nature.

These two men alternate over the year playing the part of "Lover of the Earth Goddess" with the "dark man" taking over the part at the fall equinox---which is today. From today forward the NIGHTS become longer than the days and we drift toward the dark time of the year where cold rules ...hope lingers on though as in the womb of the Earth Goddess grows the reincarnation of the man with the red beard ---who is born right around the holiday that the Christians co opted for their young God's birthday---the Winter Solstice or as Christians call it Christmas

Happy Fall Equinox people may you be well prepared for the winter ahead!
