“Super Pretty Naughty”…

“Super Pretty Naughty”… There was a day a few years ago when I hit rock bottom. I came home from work one day and there was a note on my desk. It was from my wife. It said, “Don’t forget to feed the cat.” Her wedding ring was placed upon it. That was it. By the time I read the note, she was already on an airplane. She never came back. I haven’t seen her face in over two years now. That was the first day of a long, dark period. I just went down, down, down over the course of the next year or so. During that time, I wrote the first draft of my book and all the songs that make up the Neverlove album, which is coming out next month. Finally, I hit the bottom. It was a terrible day. I don’t really want to talk about it now. I wrote about it in my book. You’ll be able to read all about it one day soon. The day after that, I needed a break. I needed a break from myself. I needed a break from feeling terrible. I had been feeling so bad for so long and I desperately wanted to feel good. I turned where I’ve always turned – to music. Needing to make myself laugh and to leave all the crap behind, I wrote the silliest, happiest song I could possibly write. The song I wrote is called “Super Pretty Naughty”. It’s totally ridiculous. But it did the trick. I made myself laugh with it. Nothing about it was serious. The lyrics are total absurdity. I sent some notes to my friend Marten, who made the music for it. The notes originated with a list I made after having a conversation with a girl I used to hang around with. I asked her to explain what it was – specifically – that she liked about the music she was into. She liked to go out to clubs and dance. I didn’t understand her taste in music at all, but I was thinking at the time about making a song that I thought she would like – as a creative challenge. I wasn’t sure what the heck I would do with “Super Pretty Naughty” after it was recorded. I wasn’t necessarily thinking about sharing it with anyone. It was just something I did for myself for laughs. It was therapeutic. And it really worked. It did its job. After that, I thought about just putting the song in a shoe box and hiding it under my bed. But one night a few months after I recorded it, I was playing a show at the Garage in London. It was a great show. Great crowd. They seemed to be up for anything. I told the crowd (about 600 people) the story I just told you and asked them if they wanted to hear the song. Then I apologized in advance before playing it. The reaction was not what I was expecting. I really thought everyone would hate it. But they loved it. When the song ended, the place erupted. It was a pretty great feeling, considering where it all came from. Since then, I’ve played the song live a few times, and the reaction has always been the same. People go crazy for it! I keep expecting people to hate it, but they don’t. And by the way, when my label heard it, they loved it too and insisted it be included on the album. A few weeks ago, I was in Vancouver. I was invited to DJ a big party for software developers from<b> around the world </font></b>who were in the city for a conference. I played for about two hours – nothing but guaranteed dance floor burners. The international software developers danced hard. At the peak of the night, I decided to slip “Super Pretty Naughty” into the mix, just to see what would happen. The place went berserk. In my experience as a DJ, that’s very rare – for people to freak out for a song they haven’t heard before. People usually like a bit of familiarity on the dance floor. It was another pleasant surprise. In the last few months, I’ve posted a couple of new songs here: “Only War”, “Heart of Stone”… The reaction has been mostly good, but some of you hated those songs and you were quick to tell me so. If you hated those songs, I’m positive you will despise “Super Pretty Naughty”, despite the story I just told you. I want you good people to know that the finishing touches are just now being put on a very gritty hardcore classic hip hop record that I plan to release the same day as Neverlove. That one is going to be just for you. I’m very confident you will love it. So stay with me. The raw goods are coming. But back to “Super Pretty Naughty”… |
