My workday, hour one...

If I hadn't known any better, I would have thought yesterday was a Monday.

I always arrive to work early.

I sit in my car and listen to the music turned up... Psyching myself up for what will probably be a very stressful day. Most of my workdays are stressful. I wait until the last possible minute to walk in, waiting in a lot of cases, for other employees to exit their cars and head in before me.

I hate making idle chit chat with people.

As usual, someone had remained hidden in their car waiting for me to emerge from my own....

Cause, as usual, they just have a 'quick' question.

"Hey, I've been waiting for you. I just have a quick question, I'll walk in with you."

Oh, Jesus Christ, what is wrong with people???

"Ok."

Fifteen minutes later they are still telling me about their knee replacement surgery and how they are happy to finally be able to have it done.

Quick question nowhere in sight....

I have a fucking routine people, a list of things that I do every work morning to get myself set for the day.

"What was your question again?"

"Oh, yah! I almost forgot! I need to be off work for six weeks, what do I need to do?"

Finally.....

Still headed to my desk, haven't even been able to punch in yet. I did, however, make it to the COVID intake table to get my temp taken.

"Oh good, you're here!"

Ugh... Another 'quick question'.

"I have done a [training] course three times now and the system won't register it as completed. I really don't want to do it again, it's like an hour long."

"Did you call ITS Support and explain to them your issue?"

"No, I wanted to run it by you first."

Really?? What am I, a fucking miracle worker?

Still in my coat and boots, I follow him to the computer lab to log in and show me the defunct training.

"Yep, looks like something you need to call ITS Support for. It's not a big deal, I used to have to do this for [Boss #1] all the time because he would always manage to screw up his training."

"Do you think they'll fix it?"

What ARE you, a fucking moron??

"Yes. I need to get my boots and coat off, I'm roasting."

Unlocking my office door, trudging through....

My phone is already ringing, it's the customer contact center.

"Hi [applicant] I hear you're having issues with your background consent?"

"Yah, it won't let me in."

After a few minutes of research, it turns out Moron #2 did not use a real email address when he created his application and now that we are moving him through the hire process he is not receiving the email links for him to complete said background consent.

"Why didn't you use your real email address? Now that the process is started, I am unable to go in and modify any information."

"I didn't want to get a ton of junk emails."

A ton of junk emails you say.....

Apparently you didn't want to get any of the necessary, useful emails as well. Looks like you get to start over from scratch douchebag.

Wanting a job, but not liking what I had to say, I could hear him biting his tongue on the other end of the line.

"Ok, so, when you get your new profile set up, give me a call back. We can go from there."

Still no call back from Moron #2.

Moron #1 was excited to report ITS Support was able to fix his issue and complete out his training with no issue what-so-ever....

Yah.

Imagine that.... Something I told you would happen, happened. I'm a miracle worker.

And, there you have it.

8am became 9am before I even knew it.

When you're old and grey and sitting in a cold room on a wobbly, orange plastic chair, with the other women - betting your balls of knitting wool on 'B25 - you'll be thinking of THIS day as one of the good old days.

    ... or not. ❗😎👍😜
I'm pretty sure I won't be... I'll be thinking to myself, how did I ever manage to do that for all those years! LOL

I don't understand the need for everyone to run everything by me first. It's completely unnecessary and a waste of my time. Someone did a paid out today to purchase something for their department and came to me to fill me in. "I just wanted to keep you in the loop."

Why????

I have absolutely nothing to do with any part of that process. Are they looking for my approval? They really don't need it.

I know it sounds a bit SNARKY ( which it is ) , but worked for me !!
I'm not clocked in yet, so technically , not here yet ! Can your question wait till I'm clocked in & officially here ??
I've tried it all. "I'm on lunch, how about we talk about this when I get back?" Guess what happens! They sit at my lunch table and wait for me to eat. "I'm headed out the door, you'll have to catch me tomorrow." They aren't working tomorrow, they won't see me until next week. "I'm just getting here, I don't even have my coat off." Never fear, they don't care, they've been WAITING for me to get here! They can wait a minute longer while following me around like a shadow.

One day I'd like to be able to just work part time doing something really easy... A no brainer job. That is my goal. I don't see it happening any time soon as I have too much financial responsibility on my shoulders, but, it sure would be nice.

For, oh, a little over a decade now, I’ve regarded people at work as fitting into a distribution - 20-60-20. 20% percent of people genuinely add value, 60% of people can get something useful done if you baby-sit them enough, and 20% ... well it might be better if they were paid to sit in the corner and not touch anything. Sad, and so-very cynical ... but, when you have a good hard look at what people do and accomplish.

The way I’ve evaluated coworkers over basically-all of my 20+ years of working professionally is “would I hire you, if I had my own company?” I figure there’s about a dozen out of the hundreds of current and former co-workers. Not a super-high percentage, but that is also a lot of cherry-picking. Which begs the question of whether our dammed-near random-chance “system” of “matching” people to jobs or roles really makes that much sense, or is likely to get us genuinely moving beyond where we are, and how things work, these days. However, as always, I am completely missing the point ... as evidenced by my fundamental inability to grasp what the hell was going on yesterday (in a certain part of your fine country) ...
Are you talking about the siege of the capital building? I really, really don't understand what the point of all that was. In any way, shape, or form could they have actually changed the outcome? Nope... It was a count of the electoral college votes, something black and white. A protest, even a peaceful protest, can not change the outcome of a vote that has already taken place. It's too late.... What a shit show.

In a word ignorance. The full explanation would take years to write.
Ignorance is right! People don't realize, I'm just like everyone else. When I'm on my own time, I'm on my own time. I don't want to talk about work and fix their problems because it's convenient for them. It's my time, not theirs....

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.
