When you live in a small town....

I forced the Spawn come with me tonight while I ran errands and went to the gym.

She was looking entirely too happy, all curled up in my bed, eyes glued to her phone...

Forcing your offspring to spend quality time with you is a right of passage!

Sullen angry faces....

Sarcastic retorts....

Flippant eye rolls...

It's the BEST!

We were in the parking lot doing a curbside grocery pick up when a couple of coworkers approached my car.

"I thought that was you over here."

"Uh, yep! It's me! Even I need to get groceries sometimes."

The Spawn was huffing and puffing in the backseat throughout the whole conversation. I wasn't exactly thrilled about having to make small talk with my coworkers on my day off, but I couldn't just say "Hey, got my groceries! Hasta!!" Thankfully one of them got a phone call and I was able to make my escape.

We got to the gym and again I saw a familiar face.

"Hey, I wondered if I'd see you here! It's my first day bac"

"Hi! Yah, I started back up again just this last wee"

"I got my vaccines a couple of weeks ago so I've been venturing out again."

"Good for you! I'm happy hear that. We need start returning a more normal life, again."

I could hear the Spawn mumbling away in the background, she was faceTiming her little best friend.

'my mom knows everybody, it's so embarrassing....'

Little shit! That attitude was starting get the best of , so once we got in the car we had a little chat.

"You realize, the more attitude you throw my way, they more bonding time the of us are going be enjoying, going forward."

"uuuuggghhhh!!! Why do we have bond?"

Throwing her hand over her eyes in a dramatic gesture, she tossed her head back and pretended to die.

"Won't work, I know CPR."

The last stop of the day was a special surprise, we rolled through the drive thru at Wendy's to get a frosty.

"Hi! It's been a while since I've seen you!"

Are you kidding ?? Even at the fucking drive thru window of Wendy's I see someone who I hired not once, but twice work at the store.

"Hi! How have you been?"

"I'm good, they're making a team leader here."

"That's fantastic!"

"Did you hear I had my baby? It's a girl."

"That's great! How is she doing?"

"Well, we just got back from Helen Devos 3 days ago..." "She had adult seizures..." "Too long in the birth canal..."

For the life of , I'll never know why people reveal all that stuff .

"I'm so sorry hear that."

Thankfully there were other cars in line at the drive thru and I could break away.

"How do you know all those people?"

One of the main reasons the Spawn hates running errands with is because everywhere we go, I run into someone I know.

"It's a small town babe and I've worked with the public for a long time."

Living in a small town has its good .... And it's not so good .

It can suck when a 5 minute errand turns into a 45 minute conversation with someone you bumped into, but it can be wonderful when your car breaks down and everyone is popping out of the woodwork to make sure you have rides to get where you need to go.

Small town life on a Sunday!

I actually do. Former employees that I may have only ever seen once or twice will sometimes see me and start up a conversation with me like we're old friends. I usually just roll with it as best I can. Sometimes I'll remember them later on, sometimes I'll ask my coworkers if they remember them.

I think that sounds great, and you sound like a popular lady, not surprisingly!

I live in a city but my local community is more like a small town. I wouldn't change it.
Sometimes it's great.... Sometimes I'd love to just be invisible. I'd like to be able to eat out with my daughter without people asking me the next day at work what we ended up ordering. (Because they saw us at the restaurant.) I don't know that I'm popular, more a very nice person who is genuine. When I ask someone how they are doing, I genuinely want to know. People can tell.

My middle son skipped school and was ratted out immediately by my neighbor. Within 5 minutes I had an fb message and a call out to him. That was the last time he ever skipped school and walked home.

That rumor mill.... It's something else, isn't it?! That's why I choose to venture out and get away from it...

I'm still running into old customers and the conversation always starts off with, "are you still working on bikes?". I tell them no, then they proceed to tell me what their problems with their bikes are.
Oh, don't you have that?? It's like they aren't listening to you at all.... They're hoping you'll just say, oh, drop it by, I'll take a look on my spare time.

So true. I went as far as working in another state for just a Lil break. Seems every one knows everyone and everything about u. Hard to handle at times. But still would not trade it for city life for anything.
You're right, everyone does know everything. Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes it's a bad thing..... People who've known me for a long time still ask me if I'm doing ok, since the divorce. Ugh.... People who know me from work want to talk about work. Even worse. Good friends usually ask me when I'm going to start seeing someone again....

Sometimes.... I want to be a noone. One of the reasons I like to trek out is because I can get away from the endless small talk and just experience stuff.

Just have to love living in a small town. I enjoyed the story.

The Light is shinning and she is lonely and waiting in the darkness.
