The Perils of Country Living

Having lived in a second floor apartment for nearly ten years, are a few things I've not really experienced in a while.

The sounds of night time silence....

Complete darkness with the exception of the moon....

My favorite, so far, has been the meandering wildlife just milling about, living their life.

Or so I thought.....

I had just gotten off the phone with my oldest last night and had nearly fallen asleep when I heard a loud thud on the wall in my bedroom.

"Holy shit! What the was that??"

Pulling the covers up my eyeballs, I laid waiting see if I could hear any other noises.

No doorknobs rattling, not windows being tapped on or attempted break in....

Then I heard again.

THUD

This time outside my bedroom window.

Frozen in terror, took every ounce of my will to slowly pull myself out of bed and walk the three or four steps between my bed and the window.

"Oh my God, please don't let be a person out .... Please don't let be a person out .... Please don't let be a person out ...."

I pulled my curtains open expecting the blinds be closed behind them but I had been lazy and just slid the curtains closed last night, the blinds were wide open.

"Aaaaaahhhhhhh"

Now screaming at the top of my lungs, I was starting face to face with two deer that were munching on the grass right outside my bedroom window. took me a full on minute to realize they were deer and not maniacal killers brandishing weapons for a forced entry.

"Mom! Mom! Mom! What is Mom!"

A terrified Spawn was now running into my room, climbing into my bed, covers up to her eyes.

"'s deer, outside my window, they scared the shit out of me."

"Really mom?!? Deer???"

"Hey, you didn't live it like I did. In my mind, it was the prelude a horror movie."

I watched them for a few more moments before they disappeared into the trees behind my house. I'm certain they'll be causing a few more heart stopping experiences in my near future...

Happy Saturday!

Maybe they were trying to invite you outside for a midnight snake.

Well now you know you can't plant flower if they are that close to the house . They will eat them faster then you plant them. Nothing like being out in the country I love it. Rabbit, squirrel, ground hogs, Deer, turkey foxes, coyotes and now a bear.
Al the small birds and the hawks it black at night can't see your hand in front of your face. Stars as far as you can see.
I'm afraid of the dark, so I don't spend much time outside during the night. My daughter will love seeing the stars, though. She's really into that stuff.

If it's possible plant a row of loose leaf lettuce in their path, that's usually as far as they will go, rabbits also!
When we lived in the country and depended on a garden my Dad did that all the way around the garden to keep the critters out!
Also an easy supply of venison..........Oh Yeah!
I will remember that lettuce trick for next spring!

I mighta been a tad nervous.
    Outdoor motion-sensor lighting? 🤔 😊❗❗
So far, I haven't seen any foxes. Or skunks, actually... I'm getting used to a lot of 'new' sights and sounds right now, doing it all on my own kind of sucks sometimes. You don't have that second person to use as a soundboard.... What was that? Do you think it's the water heater? That was a loud crashing noise, is that from the furnace vents??

Yes....Deer! I've seen plenty of videos on the internet where deer shatter plate glass windows in businesses as they leap through them, then charge around the room wrecking it because they are in a panic, then....hopefully...eventually...find their way back out. Deer can cause of lot of damage. And they're not harmless animals, either. Even does that don't have antlers can and will do some serious damage to humans and animals with their hooves. And don't forget the cute little skunks....lol
    It's a jungle out there!
If I didn't know better, I'd say these deer were laughing at me, outside my window. They didn't even flinch when I screamed at the top of my lungs flailing my arms about my head.... LOL

Haha! That’s what living in the “big city” (of Gaylord?) has done to you. “Maniacal murderers.” I wonder if deer and other wildlife can read our facial expressions, and do shit like that, just for their own amusement. At least your weren’t still under the covers when the Spawn ran in, or the both of you might still be stuck there, neither willing to leave the relative safety …

I had a kinda-similar experience in the little village I lived in for 5 years. One night there was this huge “whack!” from somewhere near the back door. Looking out the window, flashlight shining, looking all around for it to be a person. Finally went outside, but didn’t see anything, or any evidence of what had happened. I found out what it was a couple of months later - I was outside that side of the building when the wind suddenly came up. Turns out, when the wind blows strong enough, and from the right direction, if sucks the screen door open, and flings around to its stops - which was this the wall. But, when you don’t know that, and it happens at night …

I predict you may discover a few more things like this. “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger,” right? Still waaaay better than where you were living before. Enjoy the good times.
Way, way, way..... Better than where I was living before. No more noisy downstairs neighbors. No more cigarette smoke wafting out from other apartments. No more crazy neighbor antics.

Deer can be a real pain in the ass at times. they'll definitely destroy any flowers or gardens. There are deterrents you can purchase such as motion sensor sprinklers that should scare them off without causing them harm.
I've never had them come in this close to a house where I'm living. It's a very weird feeling.

Earlier in the night I'd seen 3 raccoons just walking down the side of the road, it was crazy. My daughter and I had hopped in the car to check out the wild turkeys across the road and there they were, checking us out, from the side of the road.

I live right on an intersection.... My road is not busy and it's unusual to see anything but people walking, jogging, and biking on my road. The road it intersects with is super busy! While I was typing this comment, 2 cars passed. Make that 3....
