Surprise phone calls from my Mighty Marine....

My Marine called last night, it was certainly good to hear his voice.

In the background I could hear the voices of all of his other squad mates calling family as well, it felt kind of reassuring to me. Reassuring in the fact that my boy wasn't going through this all alone, their voices were proof that they are all part of this process and every one of them were going through the same things as he. Their parents? Going through the same emotional roller coaster as me.

He will be off to his occupational schooling in three days, infantry is now under his belt, but he also told me he will be going overseas once his occupational schooling is done.

My heart sank....

"No"

"Yes Ma"

"No, I don't want you overseas"

"I'm going overseas Ma"

He doesn't know just where yet, he just knows he's going. My irrational mind is screaming at me, how can I protect him when he's an ocean away?? My rational mind is completely silent.

I hate it when my rational mind doesn't speak up.

My irrational thoughts have a way of consuming me.

When he was in Boot, we were told not to send anything special, so I did not. He was in infantry training for only 2 weeks, so he never even had an address for me to send anything to. I fully intend on sending some care packages while he's at MOS. I can't wait.

I'm more of a Mama Velociraptor.... Which is why I think I take this kind of stuff so hard. My anxiety plays a huge role in this also as all this change has become an anxiety trigger for me too. This is something I'm going to have to accept, though, as his life, for as long as he's in the Marines, will be a constant state of change.

That's the very hard part for moms and dads..The military does train around the world for different situations..He'll be with his brothers and sisters..Prayers for his safety and Hugs for mom...
They do train around the world and not all of the locations are dangerous or conflict zones. I just need to trust that he can take care of himself and those around him as they will take care of him as well. Thank you for your prayers, that means a lot to me.

Yes, it is what he is being trained for. And yes, he will be with a strong band of brothers.

It does make me feel reassured that he's not going this alone. One of his poolee friends is with him right now, I'm hoping that the two of them end up traveling together as well.

sorry to say but he choose to join in times of trouble. my nephew did 3 tours in the middle east and been in Japan for 5 years just got back to the states two month ago. is at camp Lejeune once again, his time is ending getting close to 20 years.
He did choose this path, and I do support him, whether I worry or not. I'm just so glad he calls home and texts, it does make this transition much more bearable for me.

Very true, very true. My irrational mind just always goes to the worst case scenario. That's why I post these entries... It's good for me to see and hear the feedback, to see there are other sides to be seen.

Overseas doesn't always mean a conflict area. My sister's first husband was in the Air Force and spent a number of years in Germany. Her youngest son was born in Germany. When I had an opportunity to fly for free to Germany back in the late 90s, I took her with me. We had fun and she was a pretty good tour guide!
You are right, it doesn't necessarily mean a conflict area. One of my coworkers spent 8 years in Germany before he retired. It's just so far away....

How's about those apple orchards and a walk along a calm country road? 🤔
    Or a drive... Turkey 🦃 hunting? 😶❗
My daughter and I ended up spending the day unpacking more boxes and putting up curtains and shoe racks. It's amazing how quickly the day went by... It went from 10:30 am to 7 pm in the blink of an eye.

Console yourself that dangerous military action is quiet overseas: no Iraq, no Afghanistan. I used to get calls from my son who was in Canada's special services saying he was going to a distant, hot land but couldn't say where. He survived two tours of Afghanistan, Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia and God knows where else that he couldn't say.

Yes, it is a worry and something always on my mind, but I knew he was well trained, intelligent and well lead by competent officers. Did that help? No!

He loved his job as your son loves his, and that helps diminish the worry because he is happy.
I do feel better knowing that it is quiet overseas right now.... And just because he's overseas it doesn't mean he's traveling to a war zone of some kind. It's time for me to trust that he's got this! He's a smart kid and will make wise decisions.

Thank you... I needed that. This does make me feel better.

I know you are 100% correct, but it's still tough. I'm certain it will get easier with time, though.
