The Masquerade 8

Part Eight

It takes a lot of skill to run in heels... which luckily I had as I all but fled from the laughing giant of a man behind me, leaving him in trade for.... a clusterfuck of costumed party goers! Down the grand walkway, through the wrought iron gates, covered in ivory, into their gaping jaws I ran! Hands holding my skirts high up enough so I'd not trip over them and face plant as I moved. Feeling the gown as it flowed about me, long, dark tresses trailing in my wake like silken party streamers as I literally dove into what could have been the gates of hell, for all I cared! Just so I could put a bit of distance between something that attracted me, and yet I repelled myself from him. I slipped off the beaten path and let my skirts fall as I took in the site of the mansion before me. The sounds of music wafting through the myriad of open windows and doors.

The facade of the mansion was festooned in garlands, strings of lights, candles, and all of it just added to the warmth and inviting nature of it all. Little decorations for fall and even Halloween, lurked here and there. Just a sprinkling to entice you to look and explore, but not to where it was gaudy and overbearing. A smile graced sweet lips as I began to move with no final destination to be had. There seemed to be people of mixed ages, though most of them seemed well on in years, but given the costumes, makeup, masks, and wigs it was hard to tell. It really did not matter to me anyways. I was young, unattached and free to enjoy whatever may come without guilt! The servants were all in the same costumes, both the men and women. The men wearing their uniforms, those of an old time nondescript solider from times past and the women in plantation dresses. Servants bearing trays of hors d'oeuvres, glasses of champagne, and even those bearing pitchers of other various drinks and glasses, drifted around the grounds, as well as in and out of the mansion like worker bees from their hive.

The path was leading me around the building. Through the lush lawn, peppered with topiary bushes and hedges, all of them had been shaped and sheared into something breathtaking. As if Edward Scissorhands himself was the grounds keeper! Vivid eyes washing over the small touches here and there, smaller paths jutted off the main one here and there. Sometimes I heard the burble of a fountain that was hidden from view of the main path. Even here there were lamps with candles and decorations tucked in nooks and crannies and I was enjoying just the simple things. Several servants had come to check on me, and when they hard parted ways I had a small, rather swanky looking tray that held my glass and my tidbits of food. I had picked what looked appealing to me, because I did not have to exposure to more refined foods, other than serving them to others.

On a whim I broke off from the main pathway, and onto one that intrigued me. It had been the sound of water moving, yet the source lay concealed by more of those artsy trees, bushes and hedges and I figured what the hell, I might as well explore. Laughter, music, and mingled voices drifted across the grounds like a soft, dull roar. I continued on my trek along the winding pathway oblivious of the swarms of people in the house and spread over the grounds as I disappeared around a bend. The smaller bushes and topiaries were now dominated by stands of ornamental trees. The soft amber glow of lights speckled the pathway, and their glow was seen seeping through the foliage that barred my line of sight. Another twist and turn and I was suddenly taken agog by the beautiful sight before me.

There before me sat an ornate koi pond, cast in the soft amber glow of lamp light. A hidden oasis in a garden on the estate grounds. The soft trickling flow of water was that of a small waterfall flowing over the rocks. Seated there upon the edge of the pond, surrounded by flora, was a gazebo. Slowly I crept to the edge of the pond, almost tip toeing as I did not want to startle the fish within. The lights submerged here and there allowing me to see into what would have been dark waters on any given night. A smile rose as I saw the sleek, elegant, glorious fish as they slid through the water with ease. Some looked like over sized gold fish, from normal to fancy and others looked like prized show fish with their fancy, frilly fins. A living palette of color moved beneath the surface, and I stood there almost mesmerized by them.

The first bit of food I started to indulge in tasted like ham and cheese in a mini croissant type of bread, but ham and cheese hyped up on crack and red bull. More than likely some pig that was raised in a spacial farm on a special diet, and the cheese probably some artsy fartsy name I could not pronounce. Regardless, it was delicious and I was happy I had more than one. I nibbled the small treat into nonexistence. A gleeful little purr of delight came from me as I looked at the small assortment on my tray and plucked another from the masses. I had no clue what it was, but it looked tempting, and smelled scrumptious! They say looks are deceiving, one should never forget that! I took a bite... and started to chew... and then my jaw froze, refusing to chew no more as my eyes widened!

Thankfully I had good reflexes, and was quick enough to spin away from the pond. Dashing towards the first group of bushes. I made it in time as my mouth auto ejected whatever in hell it thought I had the audacity to make it eat! I spat, and kinda gagged as I expelled the smaller bits that clung to the inside of my mouth and tongue. Once my I had gotten rid of it all, but the lingering taste, I looked at what was left in my hand. Almost glaring at it as I spoke to no one in particular. “So gross... what in hell is this!?”

I eyed what appeared to be an unassuming, generous dollop of cheese on a fancy wedge of bread. Now that it was being held away from the tray I could smell its “scent” better and my nose crinkled. Worse I saw movement! A brow arched as I drifted towards one of the lamps to see better. As the soft light washed over what I held before it I saw something literally jump, it looked like a grain of rice. Turning it I then saw another moving through the cheese, a small maggot and I almost lost my lunch right there! Now I thought I was by myself and did not think anyone would have followed the path I had taken as I blurted out, to myself. “Fucking Nasty!! The cheese is beyond mature it's decrepit!” With a snap of my wrist it was sent sailing off into the bushes to finish decomposing!! I was totally grossed out, and I had no idea that it was considered a delicacy by some! Casu Marzu, was an acquired taste I did not have... nor was I willing to acquirer it! A string of choice words spilled from my lips as I wiped my fingers on my linen napkin and quickly took a drink of my champagne.

It was the laughter that had me almost spitting out my drink as it rose like thunder behind me. I spun about to see a man in costume standing there. Ooohh no how long had he been there... what had he heard.. seen!? I swallowed before I could choke. Clearing my throat I steeled myself as I straightened up. Glacial shaded eyes roved over him, for he was cast in shadow by the trees he stood under. Wearing not only a costume of clothing, but also one of darkness. I shifted, moving back towards where I'd been checking out the fish, but kept my eyes on him as I spoke. “Careful of the cheese... it slid off its cracker a long time ago and went bad!”
