Promised

A wide path ran through the thick oak and elderberry wood that surrounded the field .. Looking down it Arthur could see the cabin.. He had sweated blood building it ,and it was a solid structure ,a testament to his attention to detail. The end notch of each hardwood log fit , snug , into the notch of its corresponding neighbor .. The slant and slope of the cedar shaked roof angled precisely perfect from the thick oak beam ridge to the wide overhanging eve ,and the foundation of native rock was as solid as the surrounding mountains from which it was quarried ..

Arthur surveyed his days work .. the long rows were straight and deep , .. the dark ,silted loam laying along each furrow, awaiting backfill .. ready for planting .. and tomorrow he would sow...
The air was redolent with the rich smell of the turned soil .. Arthur could almost taste the promise of harvest .. could see ,in his minds eye, the tall, green stalks ,moving in concert, stir gently in the cool evening breeze.. see them turn with the season into the golden yellow kernel,,that ,surely, was
Manna.

Tugging the mule,Arthur turned toward home ... The young Jack was balky. As Arthur pulled , the young mule skittered backward ,almost yanking Arthur off his feet ..Arthur cursed and dragged the animals head back around . " Come on you worthless bastard,Suppers waiting" Arthur pulled hard on the lead, but the mule braced it front legs against the tug and sat back upon its haunches. . Ears laid back ,eyes glinting,it's long neck stretched as it launched a vicious bite at Arthur ..
Arthur ,well versed in the nature of the animal ,nimbly sidestepped ,and as the large head flashed by him ,teeth clacking upon empty air ,he swung a hard overhand right fist . The blow smashed into the mules head ,just above the eye .. The mule staggered ,but recovered quickly, reversed itself and ed out with both hind feet .. This time Arthur wasn't fast enough and received a glancing blow upon his hip .. Though the only grazed him ,it still sent Arthur sprawling into the brush that lined the path ..
Jerking the lines from Arthurs hand ,the mule bolted past him ,headed towards the
Comfortable stall built onto the side of the cabin ..

" Daddys people were from Tennessee. . They came to Texas along with General Sam " ..drawn ,as was Houston ,by the steady pull of promised prosperity .. There was land to be had ,acres and acres of it ..The bottom land along its eastern rivers was so rich ,that a sprig thrust into the ground would take root and sprout ..

It's alluvial plain was thickly forested with trees of countless variety, hardwood oak and hickory, tall pine with its soft yellow wood that was malleable and easy to shape .. The willow ,along the myriad creeks and branches, leaning over the slow moving water ,weeping for the lost moments .. the stately pecan ,graciously providing it's nutritious kernel to all ..
And the Magnolia, dogwood, crepe myrtle ,the Holly, a burst of color at eye level and above .. Everywhere ,songbirds, brightly colored, darted from limb to limb ,pausing at each temporary perch to send a melodious ..
