Another in my series of TRUE stories from my past

It was the summer of 1971. I had just been separated from the U.S. Military having spent a year in Vietnam. I haven’t read a newspaper in years. I started college and managed to get a good paying job that involved a lot of travel.

For several months I’d been stopping to visit 4 strange girls sitting on a rug in front of the Old Criminal Courts Building in Downtown Los Angeles. I was on my way to work after parking my new dark blue VW bug in a vacant lot several blocks away. I was working as an apprentice at the NEW Criminal Courts Building. Every morning and evening I’d see these cute girls sitting on the sidewalk. One cool morning I thought it would be interesting to talk to them. They were all dressed in hippy clothing, no bras but had pretty smiles. One expressed great interest in talking to me….I sat with her for a minute. I later found her was Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme. I chatted with Squeaky and the other girls to and from work twice a day for about 5 months. I thought she was cute, petite, with red haired, and freckle-faced. Squeaky was smart, well-spoken for and best of all close to my height (5’-2”). Turns out we both attend El Camino Jr. College in Gardena. I told her I was recently separated from the US Navy….Squeaky looked as though she was ready to throw up! She voiced that the US military was evil as all militaries around the world are. I sort of agreed with her debating that “what would have happened if Hitler won the war.” Her answer made no sense saying “he never should have gotten into power.” “That would have been nice…..” I continued “….but he did and we had no control over that.’ This went on for a few minutes realizing she lived in a pure fantasy world, separate from reality unaccepting what is true and want isn’t. But I still had interest in her thinking maybe I can change her views….Yeah, sure.
I had little idea about who this “Charley” Manson guy was except they all seemed to be enamored (controlled) by him.

We talked about motorcycles, the Dodgers but mostly about Charley who was on trial in side the old building. I did my best to take her out on a date. Squeaky surprised me by telling everyone in earshot I’d be “fun to fuck!” Whoa! THAT was unexpected! I did my best to recover and talk about a date but she was devoted to Charley. It wasn’t long before I got disgusted with this “wonderful Charley” as it eventually sunk into my head I’m not going to get anywhere with this girl as she was just as strange as her friends Susan “Sadie” Atkins and Ruth Ann Morehouse. When they cut swastikas into their foreheads, I decided to just pass them up. These girls are crazy. When they shaved their heads, I started walking on the other side of the street.

As I said this is all true, and yes, I never got to date her but here is the irony in my story…..

As you probably know some years later Linette Fromme was out of prison but was caught with a pistol attempting to assassinate then President Gerald Ford in 1975. Wow! I used to know this girl! Ouch!

To make this true story stranger while I had an advertising firm working for a local Republican running for US Congress in 1996, I was invited to a fundraiser featuring former President Gerald Ford.

The room was full of security and I got to shake the President’s hand and chat a little. I’ve often wondered if I should have asked the former President “Hey, Mr. President, do you remember that little Manson Girl who tried to kill you? Well, you might be interested to know…….”

Nah.

Not a good idea. I kept my mouth shut.

SIDE NOTE: I’ve never read any books or saw the movie “Helter Skelter” on Charles Manson. The strangest thing nobody ever mentions is the limousine that dropped the Manson girls off and picked them up at the end of the day. Who’s limousine was it? And who provided the girls shelter, care and food? I, as with some other workers at the new Criminal Courts Building reported the license plate number to the Los Angeles Police Dept. Nothing ever happened

Definitely a close call! In her bizarre state of mind who knows what would have happened to me? I'd be another 'Manson' headline. "Squeaky Whacks Off Sailor's Mr. Happy!" Yup. L.A. Times would have fun with THAT story!

Thanks for your comment, Hamonman.
