Finding A Purpose

Finding A Purpose

It has been a roller-coaster of a year. A painful and costly divorce. A rebound to a woman I dated years ago. Retiring. Having the old girlfriend decide it was a bad idea. Finding myself in a hole I could not find my way out of. Thank God for good drugs when they're needed!

Getting older isn't all that much fun. I'm damned lucky to be healthy, active and still learning.

Now, with a clear head and a future to consider, (I'm only 66 after all,) I have decided to embark on a new journey.

I've lived in Colorado for 40 years. It's been good to me, and for me. I love it here!

But it's gotten to be more expensive. The influx of people over the past few years has congested the roads. Forget driving in Denver or up and down the Front Range. Not that you can't, but it's more like driving in California. Just too many people too fast. Real estate skyrocketed! I sold a house I'd bought 16 years earlier for 3 times what I'd paid for it. A stinking ONE BEDROOM no less.

OK. I'm getting off track some. Maybe.

I suddenly needed a place to live. I mean quite suddenly. On March 12, I sat down at the computer to browse local real estate. But, this is Colorado and there's nothing "cheap" that's remotely livable.

I started looking in Wyoming. Far cheaper than Colorado and close enough to still be able to get back to see friends and enjoy the mountains. However, I wasn't finding what I was looking for there either. I kept looking.

I wasn't looking for much. 1/2 acre or more. A couple bedrooms. I like doing remodel so it didn't have to be perfect. It DID have to have "good bones."

When you're zoomed in on a map, knowing where you are, in an unfamiliar area, is sketchy at best. I saw a little balloon pop up and clicked on it.

It was at the upper end of what I was looking to spend, but it also had a .8 acre lot. I guess it was love at first sight.

I just went ahead and bought it! That's how it looked around 1900. It was built in 1890. 4 bedrooms. 1 bathroom. The dining room is 11 feet wide and 27 feet long! Minimum ceiling height is 9 feet with the parlor and master bedroom having 11 foot ceilings.

This is how it looks now:

So, suddenly I find myself moving to the Black Hills of South Dakota. I don't know anyone there. I just know I have a purpose. Yes, the house isn't perfect but most of what it needs is a bit of care, there isn't a single structural issues.

I will miss the massive amount of wildlife which passes through my yard on a daily basis. Elk, deer, bears. Last week this little girl was just outside my front door.

Here I come South Dakota! And just maybe, the women will be a bit more down to earth.
