Whale Jail!
Whale Jail! Story written by Hilary Hanson After what seems like a very long road to freedom Russia has finally taken the first steps to releasing Orcas, beluga whales from miserable holding pens that have been named whale jails , the captured mammals have been in small holding pens and were intended to keep until the trade with aquariums were complete ... Nearly 100 were kept in small holding pens so cramped and so much like jail cells..Not able to swim to keep warm those that had buddied up hudled together to try to keep warm..Ice frozen over and around the cages had to be broken by the animals in order to surface to breathe..Russia has sent a team of experts to evaluate dozens of the captive whales , who then will be treated for different types of injuries and then released.. The New York Times reported this week that Russias Minister of natural Resources stated that the situation is unprecedented because of the numbers held captive..10 Orcas and 87 Beluga whales ..need to be released soon or it will turn into a tragic ending to the beautiful animals. Government Officials will be meeting with the team of experts led by jean-Michael Cousteau to figure out the best course of action..The whales were captured in the summer of 2018 by companies intending to sell them to aquariums and Marine Parks including facilities in China... A criminal investigation began when drone footage of the pens that held the mammals were held in violated enclosure specifications and had been caught illegally. The Russian Government seized custody in January. National geographic published a detailed report on the whales dire situation back in February .Meanwhile the health of the whales is very poor and they are very distressed.Several Orchas have bad bad skin lesions due to severe frostbite and bacteria in the water...The Belugas -including 15 young were severly distressed and those that were caught before being weaned were doing very poorly because of the workers having to smash the ice over top the pens in order for the bBelugas to surface to breathe..There is also not enough food for them to properly get the nutrients that they need to survive.. The biggest hurdle facing the experts is how and where to release them..The younger ones will have become to independent to survive without help because of being too dependent on humans and the older ones who will be transported back to the capture area are hoping they will rejoin their pods....sea ice right now is making the decision harder with transport..Which means the whales will have to endure the holding " jails " longer.. |

no Jack they should never have but Russia has a captive catch quota and a lot of the poachers and capturers band together to catch their quotas and then hold them selling them to the aquariums to the highest bidder..bidding wars are whats keeping the whales from going anywhere making it hard to feed and keep them...sad!
