Yet another neglect case! Story posted by Josh Duncan for the KelonaNow! 15 badly neglected dogs seized from a puppy mill in BC A group of Bichon Frise dogs are recieving care after Police executed a search /seize warrant from a breeder in the Fraser Valley on Wednesday .The BC SPCA along with the Police seized the dogs from the breeder and the SPCA says the dogs were in various stages of neglect , ages ranging from under one year to 14 years old and one female heavy with pregnant with pups. Michael Moriarity the BC head chief and Law Enforcement Officer says also the dogs were suffering from a long list of health issues and grooming issues..he says " the dogs were heavily matted with urine and feces which was caked into their fur..some had the presence of maggots." Other conditions included painful eye and bad smelly ear infections, significent hair loss and bad skin infections.They also had very overgrown nails and alot of other neglect issues .Moriarity says that the puppy mills are way different than any responsible breeder ..The substandard puppy mills continue to be a serious animal welfare issue in BC..There are breeder regulations to monitor the ways in which a breeder " must " follow if it is to continue to raise pups and care for the animals ...More regulations are needed though and a list of regulations are currently before the Provincial Government awaiting action. At this time none of the dogs are up for adoption .Once the<b> medical </font></b>issues are addressed then its important to make sure they are placed on a good diet and coat issues be looked after..Temperment is decided by professional trainers and placement once that is done.However the BC SPCA is saying its going to take a long time before any adoptions are done...A large scale seizure like this one Places the SPCA in a lower financial bind so donations are being sought to help cover the cost associated with this task.. In Canada the SPCA has to rely on the public for donations to offset the cost of running the shelters when animals are brought in for care..I know this first hand when i had to seize animals and place them for care..The SPCA has one shelter here near where i live and the rest of care is usually provided by foster homes ...Foster homes are very hard to find because it asks the public to open up their own homes to help care for neglected , abuse and starving animals..its a task not everyone is prepared to do.. |

Puppy mills need to be shut down and the breeders should be more adherent to stricter regulations, monitored very closely.

It isnt just regulations that are needed. How about having to get a license and that money going to the SPCA How about inspections every 6-12 months to see how things really are. Locally our three shelters are all volunteer and private donations and bequests (Virtual Symposium Group) use Virtual Symposium Group

yep i agree wholeheartedly and when these puppy mill back yard breeders are facing the courts they get a slap on the wrist from the judges its hard to find a good judge thats going to extend the maximum penalty to see the justice is done...they all should be put on an island with no water and no food see how it feels to be neglected...
