Dietary Supplements..are they worth it?

Most Doctors today are so short in giving due where its warranted..They are saying dietary supplements are a waste of a poor mans money ..lol scoff here because sales of Doctor prescribed pills are a record high..and why not? Most Doctors want to give you expensive prescriptions because the drug companies control the market, so why shouldnt they indirectly dispense willy nilly?
Fish oils, vitamins and all things have not been approved by the FDA is now being and always was bunk because they have not been tested to see if the properties are legitimate to make them effective...so if they were then the<b> medical </font></b>profession and government would be a very much more profitable profession..sucking out of the masses just because they are sure its gonna work..lol
The thing now is they say people who take supplements have to reassess their daily nutritional efforts to include what they need in their meals enough to make up what they need for nutrients sold as supplements . how many families do you now has kind of time? i dont and most families today both parents work so they have to rely on a supplement to get their daily needs suited and as well as their ...
Meal planning is a great way to get a handle on it but not enough to get one or more vitamin or mineral is important to suit the needs of any one person or family..The<b> medical </font></b>profession is in it for the mighty dollar and is discouraging people from buying or taking supplements they say is not necessary.
*** personal opinion here , I take two supplements daily and its because i cannot get it from my foods because of my disability ...certain foods create pain and i have to take supplements to offset which i cannot get from pain causing foods....i cant eat cereals , milk,' yogurt or cheese...i take b to fortify my nails promote hair growth , keep skin bright and smooth and also helps with sensitive nerves associated with pain...I also take fish oil capsules as well to help with, aging , brain function and heart health , i am glad i have a doctor who promotes these things...dont be misled by those who say " bunk " to supplements it just may be the benefit you need ..

I am more of a believer in proper diet and exercise. In my 30's I used to weigh over 400 lbs. However, a mild heart attack at 39 changed my way of life. I went on a eating plan(given to me by a nutritionist) and started walking more. I currently weigh 260 and have managed to keep my weight down since then. No dietary supplements here...just balanced meals and portion control.

It all depends on your diet and what you are trying to supplement.
First know and understand the root cause.
Try to find a natural way to reverse the root cause.
If in effective, see what supplements works directly with the root cause and not a symptom of the root cause.
Example: issue is being tired
Root cause is hrs of sleep
Don't take caffeine to stay awake, get more sleep...

The most important thing to take is fiber it helps with digestion and makes sure that you get the best of what ever you eat

I always go with what my doctor suggests. However, getting a second medical opinion doesn't hurt. Eating better and getting the heart to pump are good alternatives.

well i disagree that dietary supplements are a money making gimmick..They are put in place for people who feel their diet does not give them the vitamins or minerals from their foods..I take them because a hereditary heart disease passed down from both sides is beneficial. fish oil gives me that as opposed to having to take four pills..and after my accident having my head shaved from brain trauma my hair didnt grow back taking b 12 does help..so at 34 yrs you think its easy to say that but when you reach my age and still are at a peak well then tell the world..

diet is important if you can get the proper foods that support what vitamins and minerals your body needs..If you have a disability that is sensitive to foods and causes pain and you know that you are not getting what you need then supplements are not that bad....supplements for me eliminates the need for more doctor prescribed pills..i eliminated four prescription pills from my normal life by taking the two supplements that i i do..my disibility pain depends on what foods i eat.if you felt pain like i do from just a simple food you would know .

fiber is important if its the right kind that does not cause ppl pain ..i have to be careful about too much fiber but you are right more fiber in any diet will prevent any complications now and later.thanks

sure is if you got the right doctor and if you are not sitting in a wheelchair as i do most days ..getting the heart pumping is kind of hard ..lol but you are right i dont get any second medical opinion when i got the doctor who knows me best...

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible and his Herb Bible sure helped me. Taught me everything I needed to know about the subject.

To echo an earlier comment, it depends on what you taking and what you try to supplement. I've actually had a doctor "prescribe" me a series of supplements to improve metabolic function, and if I take them for two weeks straight I can feel the difference in my body.
On the other hand, a lot of the "nutrition" in over the counter multivitamins is present in forms which are difficult for your body to digest and absorb. Often supplements need to be taken with food to get good effects. There are folks with.a lot more expertise in this area than myself. A licensed dietitian may be able to give you more info on which supplements are really useful vs those that aren't.

wow thats great to hear glad for you at least you are one up on most who comment on the subject..i have a great doctor who has not steered me wrong yet..i cut four doctor prescribed pills because of what he taught me and the pain of the amputation also makes me well aware of what is needed and not needed to get from my supplements that i cannot from my food..thanks

ok supplements are a funny thing. drs. call the junk unless they have prescribed them and are making money from them.....so supplements are probably a good thing but the drug companies don't make money so they try to discredit them.
now on the flip side it does depend on where you get your supplements. most "store brands are garbage and dont have enough "Supplement" in them to bother. the brands tend to have artificial vitamins and minerals in them that the body doesn't recognize or the digestive track doesn't ingest or wont dissolve and the go straight out just as fast as they went in. don't bother with anything at target or walmart or gnc. there are very good brands. the best one i have found is nutrilite. they have been around for 70 or so years and have farms where they grow their own plants to harvest their supplements and as such are 100% real deal. might cost a bit more but actually work i've taken a multi-vitamin from them for years and can definitely tell the difference. you may not like Amway but by God their vitamins are the real damn deal and fucking work

nope i am quite happy with my doctors expertise in the field of supplements vs prescriptions...he wanted me to get away from those prescribed pills that was making my body worse keeping me oppressed so to speak..I am taking what he suggested and a few prescribed pills i feel as well as he does my body needs...i am happy with that decision..thanks...

Well some doctors call them junk but they are getting perks from the drug companies to push medically prescribed pills that have been tested and doctors and the FDA dont make any money from their sales and if the FDA tries to discredit their sales they can only do it by saying that tested supplements are not credible...but ppl have been using plants and herbal remedies since the beginning to heal from the outside in and vise versa....so whose to say which works best for the single persons body...prescribed doctor medication or supplements made from herbs and plants that our ancestors relied on to heal any number of ailments.? I get mine from a good store and someone who knows what each does..thank you so much

thanks thats good to know about the fish oil you know when i was young in grade school we had to take a fish oil capsule before classes started and we did benefit from that so there really is proof that some do work .i think the supplement producing industry has really gone a bit far in selling things that are supposed to have benefits ..not all are pure enough to actually reap any benefits from..the tried and true seem to be the ones to count on ...thanks
