Why Torture

Because it feels good. Some people are just hard wired to like pain. Pain blocks out any other stimulus. There are no distractions, and the person feels isolated or disconnected from ordinary reality. Also, the human body releases endorphins in response to intense pain. Endorphins are natural opiates that keep the brain from being overwhelmed by the pain signals that the nerves are sending. Runners can experience this when they "hit the wall" and suddenly find that the pain of running disappears. Some people enjoy this "natural high", which they can get from the pain too. Putting up with the pain or suffering through it may be seen as a proof of masculinity or self-discipline.
