Hometown love

If you want to see tinsel and stars just go to la
To ride a subway car try New York way
Well you can go to Philly amytime
If the Liberty Bell rings your chime
But we're all here in Cleveland, Ohio...

As I have mentioned before I was born in North East Ohio late November in 1975, near the banks of the Cuyahoga River. Yes the same river that caught fire just six years earlier, and thanks to a bias Time article helped usher in new EPA standards. Why do I say biased, well the pictures they used were from a fire on the river in 1952 which was worse. Neither of which as bad as the river fire in 1912. The fire in June of '69 did not last long enough for pictures. In fact no pictures of it exist at all. We embrace it now as part of our history. Like so many other cities in this country with their own fires.

I was just two years old when the great Blizzard hit in January of 1978. Wind chill at -100, temps dropped 39 degrees in six hours that early morning and shut the city down for two days. I touched in an earlier blog about the segregation issues in schools by the end of the 70's where they instituted busing. In fact many people had been leaving the area in great numbers at this time (including my family) Cleveland was given the moniker the "mistake on the lake" and has endured many jokes at its expense ever sense. Although the mistake on the lake was the old Municipal Stadium, Cleveland kind of absorbed it.

The reality is, once you get pass the bad sports teams. The one major sports championship since 1964 (which was a gift from the NBA). The burning river. The reluctance to change with the times. Political scandals and the like, one will encounter a great gem in the heart of the country.

You can see downtown when watching many of the MCU movies (The Russo brothers were born here in the 70's as well). We have the Christmas story house, and many scenes from the classic were shot here. We have world class restaurants here. Iron Chef Michael Symon, Halle Berry, Drew Carey, Monica Potter, Steve Harvey all hail from the area. We have Art Museum, Natural History, Botanical Gardens, Science Center, A sub to explore, and many more

Plus here you are within two hours of being on the beach, or the mountains, in a forest, a big city, or out in the country. The only place in the world that has an area dedicated to to cultural diversity and peace. The Cultural Gardens are a true treasure to behold. https://www.clevelandculturalgardens.org/

So there you have the best location in the nation. You should come visit us sometime. I can show you around.

Reminds me of the blizzard of ‘77 in Niagara Falls and Buffalo area, we had a 10’ drift covering our back door.

I love to meet new people and explore new places. I once took myself to Oregon and would love to go back and find the places I missed.
Denver Colorado is my hometown and it has vastly grown. I can find my old neighborhood, the old school, the exceptional City Park, the Natural History Museum with its dioramas and more. I am fairly sure I would not want to live there.
And then you can visit Portland and Boston, which is only two hours away. I have a seven mile white sandy beach down the street, snow skiing minutes away, and coastal lighhouses to take your to visit the Maine coast line. So come on and visit. I write a great travelogue

I am surprised you can remember specific blizzards in Buffalo. The city seems to get dumped on all the time up there. 10' drift makes me think of this one huge storm we had in Kansas. They used tractors to load all the snow in the middle of the street, they seemed 20' high before they pushed them in the trucks to take away.

Thanks I appreciate that. Best part about the Christmas story house is they give tours, and have it made up similar to the movie. Funny thing when the leg lamp arrives, you can tell what shots are from here, and which ones were shot in Canada by the box. The door was different sizes and Fragile is moved based on the cut

Definitely a bona fide invitation. History rich it is, like most larger cities this side of the Mississippi there is a great mix of old and new with wonderful "ghost" stories. Cleveland just happens to be a place that gets in your skin. It is hard to leave for good. People keep coming back

Now that sounds amazing, and would get me closer to my #1 goal on the bucket list (seeing all 50 states, driving the lower 4 I have yet to get into the New England States.. I will definitely keep it in mind
