Where I Always Belong

Where I Always Belong

After about a 2 hour drive, sometimes less if I'm not seeing many state troopers, I make it into Corpus Christie. Down to the south side of town. Usually by now, I can feel the excitement building. When you get to the bay, there's a big bridge. It spans the Inter-coastal Waterway. Within sighting the bridge, the windows in the truck immediately come down.

You can see the bay now, littered with boats. Some out fishing, some traversing the waterway, and some just out enjoying life. I'm close.

It's about this time the smell of the ocean air hits me. And it does something to me, that I've never really been able to explain. I'm sure this writing will fall short as well. It's like every ounce of stress that I'm carrying is just gone. Like an exhale of cleansing, with an inhale of total bliss. Like life just started all over again.

After the bridge, I'm on the Island, but still not there. I turn left on 361 and head for Port Aransas. The gulf being not more than a mile away on my right, for the rest of the drive, welcoming me back. After about a 15 minute drive, I turn onto a beach access road. As I come over the dunes, there she is. The beach. Now I'm stoked.

As I've stated before, I have a special spot at the beach, marker 11. It is no different than marker 12, or 10, or for that matter 15 though 20. It's just where I go, multiple times a year. And it's always the same. I park, get out and walk down to the water. Stand there and just breathe. Heaven.

It's not the prettiest beach I've ever been on. No where near as pristine as some Caribbean beaches I used to frequent. But this is home. I don't live here, but it's where I "belong". Nothing is ever wrong here. In 25 years of coming to this exact spot, I've never had a bad hour, much less a bad day. It's just the perfect place in the world for me.

I know there's bound to have been posts on your favorite place to go. Favorite vacation spot. But do you have any certain spot that just feels perfect? Every time? Like you were born to be right here, each and every time your there?

Mine is without a doubt, beach marker 11, on the Port Aransas beach.

It's been too long. Think I'm taking my daughter and the puppy down for the day, this Saturday. Weather looks to be fantastic.

It makes it nice when you're perfect spot is where you live. I'd have to live in a tent to actually "live" at my spot. LOL

The picture is a sunrise from the last time I was there.

Next time you head down, let me know. I'll show you some stuff...Ok..maybe that came out wrong. LOL

The dolphins swimming with the Ferry are always cool to watch. If you go down to the Jetty's. There are tons of sea turtles swimming around .

There are a lot of times there is a ton of seaweed washed up. But they usually clean it up for the weekends. It's a lot different in town after Katrina. Two of my favorite restaurants are gone. Talked to one of the owners on his cell. Said he just couldn't bring himself to rebuilding it.

How blessed you are, that you have a special spot like this, that is always "Home", and how nice that you are able to visit if frequently.

I stopped to wonder if I have a special place like. I do not. But maybe I haven't found I need it.

I've been to California at least a dozen times, and I'm now ashamed to say, never been to San Francisco. Don't yell at me...

I've heard it's beautiful place. Didn't someone sing another song about it.

When the lights go down in the City
And the sun shines on the bay
Ooh, I wanna be there in my City, oh Journey...Lights.

LOL...never mind..I'm thinking Harvey, last year. See I told you I was bad with names.

Yeah, it wiped out a lot of people down there.

March is funny down there. It can be in the 60s..then the next day in the high 80's. Sorta like the rest of Texas. haha.

Thanks..I think so too.

You're not alone. I've tried to describe the feeling to a lot of people. More than one have given me the ..."uh..yeah" look.

This spot is an entrance to Long Beach, Grouville, Jersey....and is where my heart belongs. I was there last year but am not sure if I will ever be back.

Well that's no good.. everyone needs to get away from time to time. Otherwise, what the hell are we working for. Hope you get to "get away" real soon .

I've lived in Colorado twice. And yeah, I could see how the mountains would do that to people. It's just too damn cold for me.

Hard to find that peaceful feeling when my teeth are chattering so loud they can hear it on the next mountain.

Well... Montreal is an island - I'm surrounded by water, so... no matter where I head out to, I'm bound to hit a river or lake or some sort of shore area and each one is special for its own reasons. Boats and fishermen in one spot. Surfers in another and just lake and no one in another spot. I'm happy just to smell the water.. I have pretty low standards... 😎 I'm at the deserted marina as I write this. It's great. White caps on the lake... 🎃

I just moved 150 miles away from the area that was 'home' my entire life. I thought I would have trouble adjusting but I haven't because I'm still in my home state. I enjoy traveling but nothing lifts my heart like seeing the Welcome sign!

We have great beaches here, too, they just aren't usable for 2/3 of the year.

Nice.. Yeah anything around water is always great for me, but I'll still rather be at the ocean. Sounds like you've got a pretty good set up though.

You're mountains and ocean made me think of Truly, Madly, Deeply. hahah

I wanna bathe with you in the sea.

Haha, I'm the same way driving back into Texas.

You're sign is great. LOL Reminds me of a video i saw a month or so ago. Guy says he has the perfect way to test for sharks at the beach you're swimming in. He takes a teaspoon , pulls some water from the ocean and tastes it. Says, "yep it's salty, there's sharks at this beach."

Pretty much sums it up.

Thanks, I shouldn't have posted it..Now I'm really ready to go to the beach.

And yeah, the sand does get everywhere. But it can be fun helping each other wash it off. Just saying.....

Thank you. I like to think I can write somewhat, but for the life of me, it still always seems to pale in comparison to the passion I feel when i get there.

I'm glad to hear others have a place like that. I think it'd be great if everyone did.

It's great to have a spot like that. I've had a few, but mine is always among the rolling farmland with rows and rows of corn, soybean, apple and peach orchards, livestock, horses, and etc.

By the way, that was a really great writing piece you shared with us. I am sure everybody loved it.

My Dad was like that. He was always happiest out at my Grandparents farm. Or taking us hunting, fishing.

Thanks for the compliment.

Now you have me thinking about favorite places. I have a favorite place to walk in my city. It is just a park with a trail around a pond. I used to call it my happy place. It's called Livingston Park. I have not been there enough this year that is for sure. Some day I want to write a children's book about the squirrels, chipmunks, turtles and ducks that inhabit the park. Oh the acorns they squirrel away! The turtles and how they sun out on stones or driftwood. The ducks and the ducklings, how they grow from Spring to Fall. The chipmunks that I see and give names to like Theodore, Alvin and Simon but also Calvin and Herman. LOL I do like the main beach in my state, Hampton Beach. Such fond memories of that place throughout the years. The beach is about a 45 to 50 minute drive from my city and the smell of the marsh and seeing the water tower get me going...that is when we open the car windows. It can be crazily crowded but it always helps my spirit. I love walking along the water's edge. It is probably a mile or so from the shell, the main bathhouse to the rock jetty. My last vacation was up in the mountain region of NH and I adored the views. Such big bunches of huge broccoli! That is what it looked like to me. LOL I am glad you have such a place as Port Aransas. I enjoy reading about your love for it. You convey it beautifully.
