I don't know about you all, but I find it easy to become inward focused and self-centered. When I read about...and then think about...all the people in all the other parts of the world, it is nothing short of mind boggling.

In the top 8 or 10 industrialized countries in the world we have areas like New York or even up here in Canada with Toronto that have high concentrations of population, but generally speaking we have room to breath and get some privacy. We also have technology, the ability to travel and the ability to meet our basic needs that makes the world seem very small.

What do you suppose the average someone in Iran or India or China thinks about? Do they blog about their sex lives? Are they consumed with fulfilling every hedonistic pleasure that exists?

Do you suppose that a bad day means nothing more than having to wait through a few extra traffic lights on the way home?

I took some classes in international marketing that included a few sections on being aware of other cultures, but other than that I know very little of the world ‘out there’. I’ve been to Mexico and parts of the US of A. I’ve also traveled quite a bit within Canada but never further east than Ottawa.

The world’s population is somewhere around 6 billion and I’m thinking there must be a critical mass that this old world can support at some point…

If you could pick one place where would you most like to go? Is there a culture that you’re totally amazed by?...curious about?...maybe one you will avoid like the plague?

I hope you're having a good weekend...and if you haven't already, do something nice for someone today...

FYI...my plans didn't work out on Friday...her "friend" showed up...…but I did get some other alternative attention…

I love where I live...Vancouver, Canada...my only other choice would be Hawaii...I wouldn't want to live in any of the African nations, or China or in Europe...

Thanks for the Post...For the size of Canada we don't have too many citizens...some of those countries are smaller than our smallest province with tens of millions living in them...that is mind boggling.

hugs,
flo

Being Canadian, i don't think we can really comprehend some place like say Indonesia...

I spent three years in Okinawa...talk about crowded...1.5 million people (roughly) in an area 1/3 the size of Rhode Island. For reference, RI has a population of about 1 million. Another quirky fact: only about 1/4 of the Okinawans have cars; which is a VERY good thing.

Sheesh...I would consider Rhode Island to be crowded compared to where I live!

Wow!!!! Fantastic post, I don't know which direction too go in first. So speaking from my past travels I once visited Germany and found the people I talked with there dreamed and thought about all the same things we do here in the U.S. Same thing when I was in Romania, the people there thought and dreamed of the same things I do here in the states. Like I dream of being retired and relaxing in the sun and they also thought about making a good life for there families and on and on. For me I would love too live in the desert of Nevada away a long way from a big city!!

I love Costa Rica and the people there. I am fascinated by the Inca/Aztec culture in Mexico and the rest of Central America. It amazes me how the Mexican descendent's of these people have blended Catholicism with that culture. I would love to visit Italy, especially the Tuscany area. And I have to get to Ireland and France someday.

LT, what's really freaky is the stats on population per square mile.

Average Population per Square Mile of Urban Areas
US - 2,900
Canada - 4,000
China - 76,200
India - 40,700

I feel very fortunate as I sit here in my 3 bedroom ranch on my half-acre of property on eastern Long Island with a population density of 362 persons per square mile...

If you could pick one place where would you most like to go?
Crazy... wanna come?

Is there a culture that you’re totally amazed by?
The Suri tribe in south-western Ethiopia. They have some extremely painful rituals, including lip plates, and scarification. I wonder why they do it.

...curious about?
I have always been curious about and attracted to Native American cultures.

...maybe one you will avoid like the plague?
Ones that treat women as property, i.e. Muslims in Sudan, Mormans, etc.

Elevate me...

And Australia hasn't even reached a population of 21 million yet (wont be too long though). Considering the US and Australia are roughly the same size (area wise) we sure have lots of space over here!!

Greece, Spain and Ireland and still on my to do list of countries I have yet to go to.

I also want to get to NYC and a few other spots in the US that I havent made it to on the first 8 trips there!!

Frangi x

In the end, it's all about basics. Food, shelter, and security. That is one characteristic that never really changes from culture to culture.

LustyTaurus replies on 1/30/2007 8:29 pm:
well I do know that people are people wherever we go...how we get the basics and how consumed we are with it changes quite a bit I think.
