Never OKAY to ask someone where they work or any other personal info

Yesterday, I was in a chat room. I had this older woman flat out ask me where i work and what cruise line i work for. I told her that i would not say and that it was not a question she should ever ask someone. Instead of apologizing she began to bully me and has done so since then every time I've seen her.

It is never okay to ask someone where they work. It is creepy and it can become a very bad situation. I've had someone from another site show up at my job before (not a cruise ship) and he was quite scary for a bit. So, please do not ask or give out any info about yourself on these sites. You will never know if/when something bad can come of it.

People will ask all kinds of inappropriate things. And since you had a stalker type of situation you have the right to be more guarded.

"Never" might be a bit excessive, but we definitely would not share our work or home information with anyone until a reasonable trust has been established. Until then, general job type is fair.

We have a couple with whom we have developed a great friendship. We have met members of their family and visited the lady-half of that couple when she was in the hospital. At that point in the relationship, being protective of work and general life details is not necessary. That's the only reason I say "never" is excessive.

You can never be too careful these days.

i had a person stalking me around where i used to work. i could not prove he was, so i did not report to the police, but he was there often, acted like he happened to have something to do around the area that day, and no matter what time it was, he came up to me, and tried to talk to me...started to wonder if he was following me...since then, i will never tell exactly where i work, especially at first, i will answer what type of work i do, but not exactly where. maybe later, if i get to know him, i might or might not tell him, about work...

Be safe. That should be your number one priority. Take care.

I think as long as one applies good common sense and it sounds like you did this and all will be well. There are always going to be weird and pushy people in any walk of life and perhaps especially so on a site like this.

She was out of line. Can you just block her at this point?
