something snapped

something snapped

and the trees sway left and right
to the rhythm of the base guitar,
repeating 50's vocals,
and the scratchy throaty sound
of the blues singer
as he whails
deep into
the night.

I used to think that all this mattered,
but then something snapped
and I took off running
and never looked
back.

and that exhilarating feeling
when I hold you close
means that for once I can stop feeling
the red stripes of pain
that jerk and block my vision
because, in the end
pain will always be waiting
around the corner
but for now,
it lessens and fades
away.

the dreams of then
and gone within
the wind
as I drive through deep vallies,
watching golden sunlight
smiling down through
lilting songs
rising up higher and higher
into the sky
forever.

and when the weekend ends
after meeting new friends,
after drinking beer around the fire.
after sleeping alone in my tent,
I'm driving home with my friend
numbness
sitting in the passenger seat,
sure,
he stares awkwardly out the window,
watches the trees flying ,
doesn't make conversation,
and is gaunt and thin;
but that's so much better
than feeling heartbreak pain
that never
ends.
