Hook Up Culture and what I know about it

Hook Up Culture and what I know about it

What does today's "Hookup Culture" look like anyway? A hook up is described as a brief sexual encounter between individuals who are not romantic partners or dating each other. In today's society hookup culture is one that accepts and encourages casual sex encounters, one-night stands and other related activity, without necessarily including emotional bonding or long-term commitment. "Hooking Up" has very different definitions and can vary depending on the person or on the age group that the person is from. Hooking up can range from actions that involve kissing, oral sex, or intercourse.

The term "hooking up", means an instance of casual sex, differs from hook up culture. A hook up is an act that involves sexual intimacy, claimed by many to be a sexually liberating act but others very it as degrading. Casual sex, has been described by evolutionary biologist Justin Garcia and others as a "cultural revolution" that had its beginnings in the 1920s but let's be real, it's always been around...

There was a study done on a few hundred college students showed that there are some cons to the culture... people who engaged in hookup culture had lowered symptoms of depression and loneliness but people who experienced guilt from these experiences in hookup culture actually have high reports of loneliness and depression. the study also showed that these symptoms where about even amongst men and women. hookups can include negative outcomes, such as emotional and mental injury, sexual violence/assault, sexually transmitted infections/diseases and accidental pregnancies.

Not all hook-up encounters are necessarily wanted or consensual. People occasionally consent to a sexual act unwantedly just because of the peer pressure, which is a large theme amongst our youth today. There are some major down sides to this culture and some of them are actually kinda scary when you think about them.

There are alot of con's to today's hook up culture but there are also A LOT of Pros. You get the oppertunity to experiment with new and different things, while getting to figure out what you personally are and are not comfortable with practicing in the bedroom. I personally think that exploring should be done with someone you trust but I also understand wanting that to be a casual experience. It's a good way to test out different styles of relationships to see what works best for you in a way that is less serious than dating, because everyone involved understands that this is a temporary encounter, it tends to be much less rigid then actually dating.

These are all great reasons to make sure that you screen your partners well and make sure that your potential hook up is on board and in the clear with your own personal boundaries. Remember that consent is vital. No mean NO!
