Left behind when people move out. Working TV's, Microwave ovens ( those get left a lot ) Furniture, the occasional dildo, and or sex toy as well.

But I came across a first yesterday while cleaning a three bedroom unit something I've never found before. A violin, in tune and in pristine condition, complete with soft sided carrying case, extra strings, rosin and a bow. It was no Strad. , mind you. But a good instrument none the less. I figure retail on it would be in the hundreds of dollars. Not something you'd tend to find left behind. I figured the violin might belong to the local school district, taken home to be practiced on you know? But the case wasn't marked as such, like they usually mark their cases, with those white stenciled letters on the side. Nor was it some beat up violin that would have been issued to someone to practice on.

I asked the boss what should be done with it...Standard answer from him was.."It's trash, toss it." Somehow I couldn't bring myself to toss it in the dumpster. Like it would be a mortal sin to do so, you know? For the life of me I couldn't understand why on earth they'd leave something like that behind? Or thinking to myself that someplace out there there is someone who could really use that instrument. Someone who wanted to learn how to play, or who could make a violin sing and couldn't because they couldn't afford to buy one themselves. In the end, I left it in the unit, along with the flat screen TV and the microwave that was left behind.

I've always loved music. All music really. Back in the day, I used to sing..not professionally mind you, I was good, but not that good. I suppose I might have gotten better had I practiced, or had been able to read music. ( yeah too much math involved for me ) But I could hit most notes if I heard them and they were within my range being able to carry the tune along as I sang. I always envied those who could play an instrument and read sheet music, as I grew older and started to lose my hearing that world started to close to me. Now a days I need the closed captioning on the TV just to hear a program, and haven't listened to music on the radio or else where for some time now. I miss it, I guess that's why I couldn't bring myself to tossing out that violin. It would have been like throwing out a part of myself, that I'm not ready to lose.

Off to shower now....

hold on to the violin. there is a good chance some heartbroken owner will call when they unpack.
you would be surprised how cluttered a mind gets when someone is moving under a time restraint

there is a world of difference between insane and stupid

The owner was contacted. They left it because they didn't want it. I talked the boss into donating it to the local middle school down the road.

We did that, and yes they knew they left it. Didn't want it anymore. As it is the thing is only worth about sixty bucks retail. Going to donate it to the local middle school.

Your boss sounds like a real prick. It would be a shame if someone cut the brake lines on his vehicle, and he died in a crash.

Most areas have this law: found property must be listed in the local newspaper and reported to the police. After a certain period of not being claimed, it is yours.

Chances are, something you find was stolen, then dropped.

Most persons set up a Forwarding Order with the post office so that they will get their mail. You can mail a letter to the old address, and it will probably reach them.

Check your library, ask if they have the DVD movie "THE RED VIOLIN"

Who is John Galt?

Naw he's a good guy. But we get this kind of thing too often with people leaving stuff. Too much stuff sometimes. After a while you just get tired of dealing with all of it. As a rule ( by local code ) we have to hold on to things for thirty days after someone has moved out. Given the all the stuff we have to deal with sometimes it's a real pain in the ass. The Tenant was contacted by phone, yeah they knew they left it and no they didn't want it. We'll be donating it to the local middle school.

If the owner doesn't come back to claim it you can sell or or ship it to me. I'll reimburse you. I played as a kid in elementary school. I loved the violin.
I'm hoping the owner comes back for it.
There are also music programs for underprivileged kids that could use the donation of the violin.
