It was another hot and humid work day, stepping out onto the large porch of the duplex to try and catch a breath of a breeze I sat down on the steps for a break. Sipping my coffee ( which I had been keeping in the freezer of the fridge while I was working to get it cold ) I saw her coming out of the corner of my eye, running in my direction. She ran up the stairs and leapt in to my lap, knocking the travel mug out of my hands spilling it refreshing contents. Seeing the spill she quickly got out of my lap went over and started lapping up the puddle of coffee off the cement stairs, not finding the taste of cold black coffee to her liking she once again climbed the stairs towards me her tail wagging like she'd just re met an old friend. Once again she jumped into my lap her nose nuzzling into my neck, that long pink tongue of hers licking my face all the while waging that tail. I'd haven't had that affection from anything, person or animal in a long time. Not since I lost my own dog many years ago, a birthday present from my ex wife on my thirty-fifth birthday. Best present she ever got me was my dog.

Well my new friend was calming down a bit, when I started petting her head and then checked her collar to see if she had some sort of identification, there was none...I heard a woman's voice calling out Pup, here girl.. where you at Pup? Looking up I saw Red for the first time. I must admit I was smitten the minute I saw her. Did you ever meet someone you just knew you were going to like? Someone who you knew you'd be best friends with. That's how it was when I saw her...at five foot three she'd never be a super model but she was a looker. Forty-ish, red hair, blue eyes and all the right curves in the right places. Walking closer she saw "Pup" nestled in my arms and said "There you are...bad girl running off like that you could have gotten hurt." Pup's tail stopped wagging at the sound of admonishment from her mistress, and started to droop between her hind legs. Speaking to me, she said "I'm so sorry about that, I was putting some empty moving boxes out on to the back porch so I could make some room in my new apartment to unpack more, and pup got out. Before I could catch her she was down the steps and off running. " Looking at the spilled coffee on the steps, she once again told me she was sorry, figuring out that pup had caused the spill to happen, then admonishing Pup once more for causing the spill. Then she quickly introduced herself as Tess, and then just as quickly added "but everyone just calls me Red, you can probably guess why?. and then said you've already met Pup, she added with a grin.

I introduced myself and told her not to worry about the coffee, I had a full pot at home and I could always get another cup. As for Pup interrupting my break, by introducing herself as she did well that was a welcomed event.. that I liked dogs and Beagles had a soft spot in my heart having one of my own once upon a time. She smiled at me and asked if I lived in the duplex? I told her no, that I lived on the property a street over in one of the large two bedroom units, That I was just there to put the finishing touches on the place before the new tenants moved in the following day. When Red realized I worked for the complex she uttered uh -oh, right away I knew what she was thinking and told her accidents will happen and pets "escape" all the time around here, that dogs having to be on a leash at all times when their not in their owners units that she needn't worry about Pup getting out. Going on to say that a tenant a street down lets her cats out every morning, the cats like getting outside and always go back home when they've had enough "fun". As long as the pet in question doesn't cause damage to the property or other pets or themselves we tend to look the other way when we see them. As I said escapes happen. I could see the tension ease with Tess, knowing that she wouldn't get in trouble for Pup's little outing.

Once finding out I worked here, Tess was full of questions for me...Did I know where the nearest Grocery store was? Having just moved in from out of state she explained she didn't quite know her way around the city yet.. I told her of the nearest.. a couple of miles west of the complex, with that a frown, or half smile crossed her face... something wrong I asked? Yeah, no car to drive there she told me. Not a problem I said, the bus runs right over there from this very street and she can get off right in front of the store. That I use it all the time to get there myself.. though the bus only runs every hour on Saturdays not every half hour as it does on weekdays and not at all on Sundays. But once you learn the schedule it's really easy to get there and back with little fuss. The next question was about using the laundry...did the place ever close? I told her no, the on site laundry was open twenty-four seven, that she could use it anytime she wished to do so, just to be careful about the key card that allowed her to access the place, to keep it with her, we've had cases where people have walked out of the gym or the laundry leaving their card behind getting locked out with their washing locked in being un able to retrieve it . Her next question dealt with safety, was there any problems with crime in the area? Well, I told her every city has it's problems, and that we were no different, but the area around here was pretty much quiet, that there was a neighborhood watch in the surrounding neighborhoods and that the police patrol the area by cars often on all three shifts. How far was it to the lake from here she asked next...and how far away the beaches were. Told her she was about four blocks away from the lake and the bay, and about six miles from the beaches. She seemed satisfied with my answers to the question she asked. With that she attached the leash to Pup's collar I noticed the tan line on her ring finger of her left hand when she did this and then she thanked me for my help in catching Pup and my help with answers to her questions, I told her not to worry about it, it had been my pleasure, and that I think the reverse was true and Pup had caught me...she laughed.. and said, "still, I wish there was a better way I could thank you for all your help, at least repay me some how for the coffee Pup spilt. Well... I told her... that after she got settled in if she'd like to have a cup of coffee or a drink together, maybe at the restaurant on the corner? I consider that a nice thank you.... She said she'd like that and asked me for my number.. after programing the number in her phone and testing it...she said she'd give me a call when she got settled in. Said her goodbyes to me and said come along Pup.. we still have boxes to unpack. I watched her walk away...thinking to myself.. I hope she does call.

Next Sunday.. A rather special night...a date with Red.
