 Relationships are complex and evolving. They are organic animals that move, grow, change weight and color, and sometimes die. They are good and bad. There is no right and wrong here, only better ot worse. And I think therein is how you phrase the question: is better or worse for me to be in this relationship right now? Good luck.

 A few reactions:
First, you are to be commended for sustaining a friendship since your middle/high school years! In a world of disposable relationships your steadfast devotion is wonderful, regardless of where it goes from here.
Secondly, I will presume your current residence is also your *hometown*, a community with which I have some familiarity. Having also grown up in a relative small city, I can appreciate how stifling and over-familiar people and lifestyles can become in a fishbowl. It can be challenging to embrace anonymity when you really need some. Any relationship that cannot periodically enjoy *therapeutic space* risks corrosion.
Finally- and more to your narrative- I wonder if your strong artistic/literary sensibilities (on full display in this blog-post) may have distorted your perception of the situation with your second friend. Not to minimize or discount how hard your words may have fallen upon your friend's ears, but I hope that your "reintroduction" to this friend revealed that your words were more of "whimper" than a "bang" (to riff on TS Eliot).
