Why do they always have to ask that question?

I like many other guys served my country The initial pride I felt diminished quickly when the shit hit the fan and everything became FUBAR I remember the shakes when it was over. It happens fast and seems go forever and you just want survive, but you are well trained react without thinking which is good because you really can’t think you don’t have time think. Your heart is pounding you focus the muzzle flashes in front of you and try ignor the zip crack overhead You hear the sarge yelling orders and you press forward because that’s what you are told to do. You react but you try to do so with the best cover you can find as you move into the line of buzzing hornets. You don’t think, your rifle goes click you reload and press forward out of the corner of your eye, you see another buddy fall with the pink mist around his head. you don’t have time to stop, you know he is dead. explosions erupt as ARTY gets not the fray You hear the order to hold you dive behind a log reload and fire at the men who are suddenly rushing toward you screaming bayonets fixed on their AKs the run in a line you fire he goes down the one behind picks up the weapon and keeps coming you become like a robot aim fire aim fire the bodies pile up the keep coming the a thundering roar and whoosh overpowers the din as the foliage in front of you erupts in flame you hear some screams over there one man staggers out covered in flame you aim and fire then silence only the crackling of the fire You breathe but are afraid to move your not sure if you can at first, you wait the flames die down you hear 6 - 1 on the RTO the 6-2 orders everyone forward to count the dead the stench hits you as rise to your feet, you vomit up yesterdays breakfast the weakness hits followed by the shakes someone is yelling at you to get it together and move out somehow you manage to pull yourself together you call up some reserve strength and make your legs move you begin to feel a little better you collect weapons some of the bodies are so charred that arms or hands just fall off when you try to collect the weapon somehow there aren’t as many dead as you thought. Someone found a tunnel Then another tunnel is found 6 -1 and. 6 - 2 have a conference Someone announces 27 enemy dead, they look so small lying there while not long before they seemed much much larger. They get orders from HQ to return to fire base I heard something about about letting Arc Light deal with it I didn’t know what that was But I was glad we were getting out of there away from the stench I help carry a stretcher and they give me an M 60 to hump out along with my other gear then slowly you begin to notice the constant buzz in the background. The buzz of millions of insects all around I don’t know the guy I’m helping to carry It doesn’t matter he is a brother. He is pretty quiet, I’m not sure if he is unconscious or dead. It doesn’t matter he is a brother and going home most likely away from the battle zone you can smell the cloying scent of blood and shit hanging in the air. You make it to the LZ and load the dead and wounded first then it’s your turn and with a gut wrenching climb you are above the jungle and heading back to base. That as my third day in country. And the memory that is the first to surface and be relived when they ask that question. I try to shut them out there but sometimes a few others get through ones even worse than my first firefight. Why do they always ask that question when they find out you are a vet? You know the question You have been asked it too They say it with a gleeful expression and smile. Did you ever kill anybody?
