mr and mrs claus
mr and mrs claus visited our family shelter this week. they come every year and they are an amazing couple. they dress to perfection and they arrive all aglow and with an elf. the are crazed with excitement and we've fed them early so they can be ready. santa and the mrs. sneak in the back door and then suddenly ...well they're just there and no one knows how but they come out of the parlor where the fireplace is brushing soot off their bright red costumes and carrying huge sacks and the little ones scatter like leaves to the wind. as i settle the claus' into their comfy chairs by the tree and santa's booming laugh rings through the house, little faces peek around corners and the anticipation is palpable. it's pickles who dares to enter first. she's five and feisty and clambers up on his knee. a yank on the beard that doesn't move....hmmmm. her eyes get bigger. she snuggles in and and her glossy black hair against his white beard is stunning. she whispers in his ear and mrs. claus leans in to listen. i can see tears forming in mrs. claus' eyes. but the smile never leaves her lips. pickles gramma snaps pictures and pickles get her favorite doll and gramma gets a cozy robe and the lap is open for more business. pickles stands beside santa now. she doesn't leave his side for the rest of the night. she is officially his helper. and deeply smitten. when JK is settled in his arms, sound asleep, it's a lovely picture. of course he wakes up, takes one look, luckily preserved on camera....and then screams for about ten minutes. i mean poor ....expecting his mama and wham...a giant face of fuzz and a red hat....YIKES! we have a group shot of all the with the claus' and it's wonderful. and everyone has their own santa picture. and while there were some tears, there was mostly laughter and santa was dear and sweet and snuck up behind mothers for shots if he had to. this couple are in their 70's and have been coming to the shelter for 15 years. they never miss....they never ask for a tax letter. they never are anything but wonderful and giving and at the end always leave us with a pile of extra gifts we can use for other families who are off site. as the follow them to the parlor, it's always a wee bit difficult to herd them back to the diningroom so the claus' can make their escape. one year they hid in the bushes for over 15 minutes....isn't that sweet? happy Hanukkah to the goldbergs.....you rock! You cannot conceive the many without the one. |

I need to visit here more often when I'm feeling blue. Your stories of humanity lift me. I have to tell you though, Santa Claus goes to my church... There is a white haired/bearded gentleman who sings in the church choir. The entire month of December he wears "Santa Casual" clothes to church (Just red velvet overalls, with a white thermal undershirt) and carries a bag of candy canes. It's amazing when he comes down from the choir loft to receive communion. The little ones gasp with joy, poking their parents, "there's Santa"... he brings such joy... so much joy. Even better? his car has "SANTA" license plates. Thank you for the smile.
