This is how i do halloween.
This is how i do halloween. First it was the witch that flew with black and purple gauze floating high and low, her bony fingers reaching out, snatching at the wind that carried her. She appeared without warning, her skeletal face twisted and gnarled. The moved to the center of the road as they passed the house. Then, a spider web growing daily up the stairs, over the hedges, engulfing the banisters and crawling up the side of the column. You could see some spiders against the white of the column, spinning, spinning. When the bats began to fly under the orange lights on the porch, the took to walking on the other side of the road, clutching the hands of their parents and moving quickly up the road. And yet, they did not say hello to the old woman who lived there though their parents did. One day one of the dads said he’d seen her outside with a shovel the night before and wondered about it. Within hours all the on the street had gathered, and they stood across from the house as dusk claimed the light. They could see her. She was in her front yard, wearing a long dark shawl. “My dad says she always wears it. He thinks its elekant. “ “What’s elekant?” The other boy shrugs. The watch in silence as she places things around her yard and then goes inside. It’s too dark now to see what is there. The next morning, they meet as a group and stand in silence across from her house. The day was bright and they could see the pumpkins and the sun striking the glass of the candles. But …. There were tombstones. And the spider webs have already spun out and over them. One boy whispers “The shovel”. As they stood there, staring……. She stood in the window looking down at them. She opened it, saying rather quietly but loud enough for them to hear. “Tomorrow…….I’ll get you tomorrow my pretties”….and cackled. They scattered like leaves in a draught. On Halloween, the candles were lit in her yard. Fog blew across the tiny cemetery though the night was clear. The sound of screams came from her window, muted but there. A cauldron sat on her porch where she hovered, dressed in black wearing a witch’s hat wrapped in her shawl, rubbing her hands together. They were all together and their parents trailed behind them chatting. She turned, spotting them “Candy? Candy? I have Candy”. She crooned in a horrible slimy voice. They ran, pelting across the street and into the safety of the porch where the grandfather was patiently dispensing goodies. The parents fell about laughing. As she poured them all a glass of wine, she took off her hat and waved. Curiosity won out and one by one they came back to claim their candy, walk through the graveyard and touch the plastic spiders. She gave them all spider rings to wear home. They sat on the stairs across the street watching and laughed at how scared all the little were when they came to the house. This is pretty much what happened last year. I have a lot of kids in the neighborhood and I got a fog machine that was fantastic. my tenants were terrific and helped so much with the decorating but they had kiddos so they went out to gather goodies and I held down the fort. it was so much fun. i'm a very scary witch. so far this year, I've got the witch and the web up. I think i'll the cemetery this week. once I lost my tree out front, I lost all my ghosts and hanged men.......such a shame. You cannot conceive the many without the one.

That sounds awesome. . Good for you I don't decorate outside for Halloween anymore cause some of the neighbourhood kids always smash the pumpkins and decorations.

I'm betting you make a comely witch, too, wicked. This is a fun story. I very well remember being easily frightened when I was little. I had to walk past a couple of spooky looking old houses and I'd cross the street to avoid getting too close. I used to have terrifying dreams about one of them. Excellent story! And with a happy ending, too! I was expecting the witch to steal their souls as she gave out the candy. I've lived in this condo, very close to town, and I haven't had a single child stop here in 25 years. And what a great street it would be to for kids... all condos! . They'd only have to walk one block and be able to reach about 200 doorways. I can't figure it out. . When I was a kid, we used to walk all over the place. . We'd have to return home for extra bags.

Trick or treat, smell my feet.... The kids don't come up my street and haven't for as long as I can remember. Of course it is up hill so that might be part of it plus the street lights get kind of far apart... But we didn't go up this street when I was a kid either. Vive La Difference
