In the end you will save yourself a lot of grief if you can come to the realization that you're OK, it's the world that's crazy. Just roll with it.

Feeble minded people are easily manipulated by those with hidden agendas that exist in each political party. If you are tapped into many different sources on both sides of the equation, you would find there are also those outside of politics that fan the flames for no other reason than financial gain driven by fear mongering and misinformation. Is there such a thing as a poor politician? If you checked their bank accounts, it would be obvious it’s a lot more than salary. The entire system is corrupt, both sides are equally to blame, in the end, all of us will suffer if we aren’t already.

Perception of reality is subjective, more often based on how one chooses to see things through their own set of biased filters than anything else. It’s just a part of the human condition. The only thing that everyone can likely agree on is that in the end we all die.

Dodging the political and moral implications, I will boil it down to this: never underestimate the self-interest of others. People that give in to their self-interest often do so at the cost of harming themselves through willful negligence. Unfortunately, this is not ignorance. We live in a time where the excuse of ignorance is easily defeated by the very fact that access to information is literally at everyone's fingertips. Choosing to be informed, choosing to be cognizant, choosing to be helpful, choosing to be human is really the simplest choice.

I understand your frustrations. Sadly, there is no single answer to reactionary politics. Fear, prejudice, and ignorance are the oxygen that fuels reactionaries and has done so for centuries. The fear myths are the same. What changes is who to fear.

It is somewhat depressing to read newspapers from 150 to 200 years ago. The stories rattle on about the Irish/Catholic invasion and how "real" Americans should be afraid. Beginning in the 1880s, there are editorials about how the Italians, Jews, and Eastern Europeans are refusing to learn English and promoting crime. Of course, right up to WWII the Chinese have been either "our little yellow brothers" or the "yellow surge."

Oddly, keeping a long view seems to keep me from being too despondent. Weird huh?

I wish we could relegate our current dysfunctionality to the "Twilight Zone".

Sadly, over 74 million Americans voted to reelect the most despicable President in our history, thus validating this aberration as an existential *norm*. While the events of January 6 will serve as the capstone to this sordid chapter of American history, they are the culmination of a stunningly effective five-year effort to elevate our society's worst impulses to the surface and embed them as a banal reality.

That said, I remain sanguine. While it is sad that we require tragedy of this magnitude to stimulate authentic change, I sense that momentum has shifted and our *better angels* have regained the high ground.

Your blog made me think about something a friend / colleague, who happens to be the quintessential Parisian gentleman, said to me. He told me that French people are lovely, but everyone hates The French, including most French people. Maybe only mildly relevant, but hey, I'm typing here.

My point is that one on one, most of the ignorant and uninformed are likely lovely people. We both live in Trumpland states, so we're around MAGAheads all day, whether we know it or not. Many will give you the shirts of their backs, but again, they're as ignorant and uninformed as the day is long. When Cheeto Face first ran for president, I'll never forget hearing over and over again, 'he says what we're thinking' and thinking to myself how scary that was.

Anyway, throw a charismatic (I use that term loosely) leader, and follower 'generals', at them, and watch them become zealots for his cause, true believers. An army of supporters ready to do battle for said leader. Toss in human nature of loving a spectacle and suspicion of those who are different than them...the genesis of bad behavior for the entire tribe. I really need to dig back into The Dictator's Handbook, because it's all spelled out in there, along with plenty of examples.

It is a wise conclusion.
