A stranger in a strange land part 2

Have you ever won the war only to regret losing the battle? That's been more or less the sentiment I've been grappling with these past few hours. I say this because I was almost the victim of a remarkably persistent and clever scammer. The scammer (who's profile is "softtouch2190" as a warning to any others who might fall afoul of them) did an excellent job of convincing me that they were legitimately a real person. They sent me plenty of photos emailed me, we even exchanged a few texts. Then, at 6:46am this morning exactly, they came to me with a sob story about being held up at a hotel in England. "Purse stolen. No money. Please help!" That sort of thing. Long story short, they asked for $900.00 to pay back the hotel, I told them to get lost.

Now, I'm oddly not that upset that this girl (a real looker by the way, but then the whole point of bait it to make it enticing) turned out to be a lie. Or at least, not at this moment, it's still possible that this is all just sinking in and I'll cry or something later. More I'm just embarrassed that for a single shining moment, I actually believed their shtic On some level I knew it was too good to be true, but the narrative the scammer came up with was just good enough to make me hope. It's almost a pity they're a criminal, they could have had a future in writing fiction or marketing otherwise.

Anyway, now I'm back to square one. Slightly wiser but no less lonely than I was before, but also no less wealthy. So I won the war for my financial security, but lost the battle for a lover. Worse than that, considering the state of euphoria I was in at one point when I finally dared to hope, I only narrowly avoided what I'm sure would have been a far harsher form of emotional fallout.

I had dreams of going on the first real date I've ever been on. Showing this girl around various historic and interesting places. Dining at a great restaurant, and finally retiring to my apartment for a night of passion.

Now, instead, I sit here and wonder at a world in which you can claim there are forty million people looking for sexual/romantic companions. But after taking out the liars, the scammers, the people you can't even talk to, and the ones who you aren't interested in, the list is whittled down to a mere ten. And all of them appear to be taken.

My only consolation is this: the number the scammer gave me to contact them is 1-347-786-5145 do with that what you all will. Perhaps make a few crank calls if you ever feel bored or need to liven up a party? Sell it to another scammer if you know one. Or just hand it over to someone else to have fun with.

I suppose revealing a phone number that will likely soon no longer work is about as petty as petty revenge gets. And while normally I like to at least try to be the bigger man, in this case, (and considering the number belongs to a criminal) I say that petty revenge, is infinitely better than none.

I wish you all the best, and hope that at the very least, THIS scammer, will not prey upon anyone else for awhile.
