Dangers of Using Your First Name

I stated blogging on here for awhile and decided to get back into it again. I will start with more of a PSA post today. One thing I notice on this site is many women have their first name on their profile or their username. Most are thinking it is just my first name, who cares. Most of us know not to give out personal information, especially since there are so many creepy people on here.

I am sure many are thing it is just my first name, what can they do with that. The answer is plenty. If your username is marydoesbinghamton, I at least know your first name is Mary. I know your age and body type, and possibly your occupation. If I put just Mary in a Facebook search and select Binghamton as a city, I can start to whittle down some of the Marys since I have an idea of what I am looking for. I can Google search your first name and age and search those results on Facebook. And if you do not live in Binghamton, but a small town, this same search makes it very easy to find you on social media. Give me your cell number also and I can probably track you down even easier. And I can probably find your address online just as easy. Now most people wont go to these lengths to find your identity, but you would be surprised at what some creepy people will do

Would most people do this? Probably not, but a creepy stalker would. This is personal for me as my years ago gave some guy on Snapchat her first name. He wound up stalking her at home and at work. He was arrested several times for this. This past weekend he was stalking my house again looking for her and was arrested again. We always have eyes on him. Thankfully she lives out of state and does not use social media very much and he has not been able to find her. Yet.

The likelihood of someone on here experiencing what my has gone through is slim. But who knows what kind of creeps are on here. Met any? All it takes is some creeper to become infatuated with a profile picture or take a rejection personally. Who knows how far they will take it. Bottom line is to just be careful on here what personal information you give out on here until you really know someone. Just takes that one interaction.

Lecture over, class dismissed. Enjoy your Saturday and hope it is warm where you are. I have to go shovel again.
